Ikea Odda Bed
Advantages: Extra space underneath
Disadvantages: Big sideboard
We moved into a two bedroom flat in preparation for our baby, and my mother was coming to stay with me. I had to find a something to accommodate her.
I was looking around in various places and had considered many options like sofa bed, chair bed and futon and had decided on a futon in Ikea when I stumbled across this bed with an underbed displayed in the bedroom section in Ikea, and immediately I knew that this was the perfect piece of furniture.
What is shown in the image is the main bed, which you can buy for £100. In addition I had also got the underbed that goes underneath this bed. There is also the option of getting storage boxes to go underneath this bed.
As you can see in the image, the design of the bed is a bit atypical. There is a headboard and a sideboard that come up to a height of 1 metre, which is quite high. The bed itself is at a height of 40 cm and there is 30cm high space underneath the bed into which you put in the underbed or storage boxes. The length is 207 cm and the width 97 cm. It comes in a rather off-white colour and a slatted bed base is included in the price.
As with all Ikea items, it comes flat packed, in two boxes, I think and assembly is required. The assembly instructions provided are quite clear and we manged to assemble it quite easily.
The underbed is of a very simple design and has wheels attached, which makes it very easy to move it in and out of the space.
I particularly liked the underbed idea as it is a brilliant way to utilise the limited space in a flat. You get the additional space to sleep when someone comes over, and it stores neatly underneath at other times.
The bed is quite easy to clean with a wet cloth.
Much as I love the convenience this bed provides, I dont like the large headboard and sideboard. To be honest, I cant figure out why it has to be so huge. You can try and fix it with the sideboard downwards, but that would involve drilling that piece of wood and making the hole yourself, so I didn't bother.
In my childhood, I remember all beds having enough space underneath to store lots of junk. In fact, it was one of our holiday pastimes to go through stuff stored underneath beds trying to come up with some treasures. Nowadays, most beds dont seem to have this space unless you specifically choose one that has. It is a huge advantage to have all that space to hide away all the junk.
This bed is perfect as a guestbed if you add the underbed, or add storage for that extra bit of storage space.
The only thing I did not like about it was the included bedbase, I thought it was a bit too thin and flimsy. Of course, you have the option of changing it and getting another one but that might change the price a little bit.
Bearing in mind that it is an Ikea product and unlikely to be the best quality wood, I am quit happy with this bed and I am happy to recommend it to you.
