Some time ago, I saw an ad in one of the national papers extolling the virtues of natural silk bedding. One of the features that particularly interested me was the fact that silk products can be beneficial for people who suffer from allergies, as silk is a naturally hypoallergenic substance and also helps to wick sweat away from the body. While I did not buy anything on that particular occasion, I thought that it would be of benefit to look into the subject, as I suffer quite a bit from allergic conditions such as asthma and eczema, and anything that holds out a ray of hope is worth investigating.
Some time later, I searched for silk products on Amazon. While a lot of products were way out of my price range, I could manage to afford to treat myself to a single silk pillow slip. The site makes the following claims about the benefits of this product:
Soft, Smooth and Beautiful - 100% 19 Momme Finest, Smoothest, Creamiest and Shiniest Seamless Charmeuse Silk.
Naturally Hypoallergenic - Relief from itchy skin conditions such as rosacea and eczema.
Anti-Ageing & Hair Frizz - Superb anti wrinkle skin care product which stop your face and hair from drying out.
Luxurious and gorgeous - Ultimate sleep design, perfect gift ideal for any occasion or treat yourself.
Machine washable - at 30 °C using mild silk detergent. We recommend Tenestar as a cleaning agent for both machine and hand washes. Air dry and cool iron.
I was really excited about trying out my pillowcase, and luckily it arrived really quickly! The pillowcase was a nice generous size, and would slip easily over even the fattest pillow. The pillowcase absolutely oozed fine quality, and looked and felt sumptuous, with a very gentle sheen to it. You could really feel the difference between this case and the cotton ones that I had been using. The silk pillowcase was SO soft to the touch, and you just want to run your fingers over it!
When I slept on it for the first time, the first thing I noticed was how lovely and cool the silk felt when I put my face on it. I hoped that this would prevent my face getting too hot and itchy during the night. It was really nice sleeping on the pillow, and the lovely cool sensation lasted all night. My skin definitely felt calmer and on waking, I also had the added benefit that my hair looked really smooth and conditioned! There is an old beauty tip of running a silk scarf over your hair to detangle it. I have long hair and usually have to drag the brush though it in the morning, but since using the silk pillow, my hair is naturally detangled, and needs minimal attention!
At first, I was really careful when washing the pillowcase. I used to handwash it in special detergent. However, the case is a heck of a lot tougher than the manufacturers make out, and now I lob it in the wash with all the other bedding and tumble dry it with everything else. I know this is not recommended, but it has done absolutely no harm to the pillowcase, which is still as good as new after 18 months.
When I go on holiday, I always take the pillowcase with me. If I am sleeping in a strange bed, I don't know what detergents the owners have used on the bedding, so the silk pillowcase gives me a layer of protection for my skin, and helps me sleep better, as I have something familiar with me! I just have to make sure that I don't leave it behind!
As for my eczema, the case has not cured it, but my skin is definitely calmer since sleeping on silk. I would highly recommend my silk pillowcase to anyone who likes a touch of luxury, and it would also be really beneficial to allergy sufferers, or to put on the beds of young children who suffer with eczema. I now want to save up my Amazon vouchers so I can afford a silk sheet!
