John Lewis Value Recycled Polyester Hollowfibre Duvet- 10.5 tog
Recently we have been decorating bedrooms and changing them around a little as the family has grown up and single beds are no longer required. This has necessitated the purchase of new bedding and in particular duvets.
A few years ago I purchased a beautiful all seasons quilt from The White Company. It had two sections that clipped together for winter, and apart each could be used in summer or autumn on their own. I loved this quilt but began to tire of the yearly trek to the cleaners to have it sent away to be washed. Added to this it was becoming expensive. So I migrated away from costly luxury quilts and started to explore the cheaper end of the market so that I could replace them frequently.
My latest purchase in this category has been one of my most successful. I had noticed a duvet on the John Lewis website which was retailing for only £19.50 for the double size, and it claimed to be made from recycled plastic bottles. As I am environmentally minded I was quite taken with this concept, but I was worried about the comfort element. I studied the reviews on the John Lewis website carefully before making a purchase. I really value websites that publish customer reviews next to the product, as so often it helps me to decide if the item is worth investing in. You have to be a little discerning but generally the overall opinion becomes clear.
Ordering from John Lewis is always a pleasure as the goods are delivered really quickly and orders over £30 are delivered free. This time was no exception and my duvet arrived within three days.
The duvet is a winter weight 10.5 tog and the outer cover is a poly cotton mix. It felt very substantial on opening, and I felt that the filling was going to be perfectly adequate for a cold night. It is also worth saying that the duvet is guaranteed for 5 years, which for a value range duvet I think is outstanding. The duvet is also fully washable. My machine isn't one of the newer large capacity models so I would hesitate to do this at home, but if you have one then this is an option.
I think the only negative aspect I could comment on is that it isn't as soft to touch as I would like before it has the cover placed on it. This doesn't affect the comfort at all when sleeping in it, but it does impart a slight concern when you first feel the fabric. It is slightly crinkly and stiff but this is not felt at all in use.
Since purchasing the duvet we have tried it ourselves, and also my daughter came home recently for a few days and so became my product tester for the week. She said she thought the duvet was fantastic, and she was amazed when I told her that it was made from plastic bottles. She felt it was warm and snuggly and stayed in position well during the night, and she was so pleased she has requested one for her birthday!
I love the fact that the filling stays in place all night and does not migrate to the end of the bed in any way. The 10.5 tog rating is ideal as it covers all the seasons really, except it may be a little too warm if you have a south facing bedroom in the summer. It is also important to note that John Lewis also make a summer weight 4.5 tog duvet in this category which retails for £17 for the double. At the moment the duvet is being used in a bedroom that faces north, and even in the cold spell we had, which coincided with my daughter's visit, the 10.5 tog was perfectly adequate.
I think this is an excellent purchase for a university student as it represents excellent value for money. The single is only £15 so is ideal for Halls of Residence. With so many purchases to buy when a child leaves for uni this is certainly one to consider.
Reviews on the John Lewis website give this duvet a 5* overall rating and to date there are almost 50 reviews. I can honestly say that this is superb value for money. I used to pay £20 to have my previous duvet washed, and going forward I intend to purchase more of these as the price is so good. I have tried many other duvets including those from Asda and Tesco, as well as more specialist manufacturers such as Snuggledown, and can honestly say this is one of my favourites in terms of comfort and value. If we have a hot summer I will certainly consider purchasing the 4.5 tog from the range, but if as usual summer is less than perfect this purchase will cover all the days of the year perfectly. Highly recommended.
