Rauchbier means a smoked beer. Smoked beers are a speciality of Bamberg, a small German town. Schenkerla is probably the best known and the one you are most likely to find in Britain. The beer is dark, smooth, bitter-sweet with a 5% ABV. Dominating over everything else is the taste of the malt which has been smoked before use. It's a bit difficult to describe the taste exactly. It is certainly not subtle and is probably very much an acquired taste. It is definitely one of my fvourite beers. If you like smoky bacon crisps, bacon butties and barbecues, you will probably enjoy a glass of Rauchbier.
