Cider has come along way in the last couple of years, no doubt about it. Pretty much it was Strongbow or White Lightning, but now the choice is endless. The government seemed to predict this and jumped up the tax on cider. Dam you!!!
But your bog standard apple cider has a rival, there is now different types of fruit cider. Brothers have come up with toffee apple cider.
History of Brothers:
Started in 1992 from Somerset, the Showering brothers were children of the parents who produced babycham. In 2005 after appearing at festivals etc, they realised their potential and launched into supermarkets. They now generate over 46million per annum.
Brothers cider comes in Strawberry Pear, Wild Fruit Pear, TOFFEE APPLE, Festival Edition Pear, Pear, Premium Apple, Cloudy Lemon.
The product comes in a brown 500ml bottle. The cider is 4% and produced in Somerset, UK. Whilst the exact ingredients are unknown, the label says "delicious blend of cream soda and smoldering toffee". So quite how they get the toffee flavour is unknown. The full 500ml bottle equates to 2 units.
This product is of very high quality. The taste of toffee is very obvious, which I can understand could be sweet to some people, but for me, its just right. The "fizz" which you get with the likes of Bulmers is missing. Its abit more flat than other ciders, again this isn't a bad thing. Overall though, its full of flavour and tastes excellent.
Asda are selling this for £1.98 and Tesco for £2.09.
I do like an alcoholic beverage now and again, like always I like to try new things and generally take a look around the supermarkets to see what is on offer.
Brothers - Toffee Apple Premium Cider:
'It has taken 4 Brothers and 14 generations of cider makers, from the Showering family, to create this unique Toffee Apple Cider. The delicious blend of cream soda & smoldering toffee is for those who don't do normal cider'
I'm really not one for normal ciders just really dislike the taste; however I do like the different kinds of ciders, like the red fruits etc. When I was doing a bit of shopping these were on offer, I like toffee and I like apples so I popped a few in the trolley.
Not having tried this before I was intrigued to know what theses would be like and I have to say they were delicious! After chilling I poured into a tall glass, there was a nice fizz to it and you could smell the sweetness.
My first taste I was blown away just how yummy and morish this actually was! You have a sweet slightly warming bubbly apple taste then you get the rich tasty toffee. I was surprised just how much it does taste like toffee apples however a lot nicer and doesn't get stuck in your teeth.
I like the fact that there was a nice light sparkle to the drink, but the right amount of bubbles for me. Too many can make things rather gassy, however here I think they have got then right combination.
Some flavoured drinks I think can have a somewhat artificial taste but this tastes so crisp and fresh, for freshness this has to be one of the best ciders I've tried. You need a bottle opener to remover the lid but it comes off easy enough.
This one is perfect for the colder nights and it has a smooth warming feel to it with the toffee, great for your bonfires. This drink is suitable for vegans, gluten free and contains no artificial colours best of all contains no fat.
It is a rather sweet drink so not suited for all, I love sweet foods and drinks so for me this is perfect and looking forward to my last bottle tonight when I finish work. This drink comes in a 500ml glass bottle which clearly displays the units within (2 units - 4%vol) and drink awareness.
The whole look of the bottle I have to admit was inviting the brown colour of the bottle matched lovely with the labeling. Once consumed the bottle can be recycled. I also like the fact that this is a British cider and a darn good one at that!
Price and Availability:
Asda was selling these beauties off at only £1 per bottle (500ml), I really wish I got a few more now. I'm not a massive drinker but one on a night now and then is gorgeous. Normally price is around the £2 mark which is still good value when you think how much it would cost you in a pub. You can all purchase this in cans 4x440ml for around the £5.50 mark.
I'm glad I gave this a chance and I really do enjoy and drink of this now and again. If you do like toffee and sweetness I would full recommend in giving this one a go.
Five out of five stars from me.
Thank you for reading.
Autumn, "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" as the poet Keats once put it is one of my favourite seasons. Its a reel sensory season from the colours of the falling leaves to the feel of crunching them under foot and the smell of a bonfire to the bangs of the rockets Most of all I love the rich, dark flavours of autumn from treacle toffee to toffee apples and tablet (traditional sottish fudge like sweet). During autumn my tipple of choice is a thick dark porter or stout but sometimes i want something lighter and sweeter. On those occasions I go for "Brother's Toffee Apple Cider, which is particularity relevant as tomorrow is Bonfire Night.
Brother's cider comes in a range of flavours from plain apple an pear to the summery strawberry and pear and tutti fruity but its the mellow autumn flavour of the toffee apple cider that I like best.
It comes in 500 ml green glass bottles with a lovely coloured label that evokes all those wonderful autumnal colours and flavours I like the size of bottle as it is ideal for a long drink. At just under £2.0 its one of the cheaper new wave of ciders without being White Lightening cheap. I first came across it in my local corner shop last year but this year I have also found it in my local Tescos so it is fairly widely stocked.
Cracking off the metal cap I am greeted with the hissing sound o the carbonated gas being expelled. I shove my nose into the top of the bottle to be rewarded with a wonderful top note of sweet burnt toffee aroma that fades to reveal the crisp apple scent. The cider pours well with just a a touch of fizzy head before it settles and dissolves. It's a lovely translucent gold coloured drink without a hint of cloudiness. It's lightly carbonated with just enough fizz to enjoy it but not too much for the drink to become too gassy.
The cider 's fizz tingles a little on my tongue. At first I get a taste of sweet, honeyed apple juice with a hint of vanilla in the background. The flavour develops to get the deeper, darker burnt sugar taste of the toffee. Its quite pleasant, not too overpowering nor too artificial . It just gives a normal apple cider a little something extra. After the apple and toffee I feel the alcohol washing down my throat. At 4% its not too strong a cider but there's enough of kick there to remind you its an adult drink. Each bottle is 2 units of alcohol which is the sensible drinking limit for a woman whilst a man can get away with having a couple of these.
Brother's Toffee Apple Cider is a very pleasant drink that's ideal if you want something light, sweet and a little bit different. I'm not sure if I could drink more than one bottle or two at the very most, as I think it could become a bit too cloying and sickly in large quantities. Make your fireworks night go with a bang by serving some Brother's Toffee Apple Cider.
I have written a number of cider reviews, mainly because I consume so much of it and like to try the vast array of varieties available. Brothers have quite a few different ciders in their range, many of which I enjoy on a warm Summers afternoon. The Brothers' Toffee Apple Cider comes in the typical style of Brothers' bottle and label, with a picture of an apple smothered in toffee on the label. I were a little sceptical about the drink before I bought and tried it, as I thought it may be very sweet and nothing like toffee apples, but I were soon proved wrong. The colour is a pleasing amber one, with no hint of toffeeness in the smell, other than a sweet whiff of cream soda. The taste is quite special in all honesty. I cannot say I have tasted anything like it, and althoguh the taste is sweet I think it is refreshing enough to keep most cider lovers content. The taste has plenty of depth and the taste of the toffee is very easy to detect. The drink almost melts in your mouth. I have a slight preference for the sweeter ciders, which is why I generally prefer pear than apple cider. I would even say that the toffee apple cider is like a comprimise between apple and the generally sweeter taste of pear ciders.
As I bought a number of different types of cider today at Morrisons, I think I paid around £1.50 for the 500ml bottle, which is just under a pint. I think cider in general is reasonably priced, and I always look out for offers. The Brothers' Toffee Apple Cider contains an ABV of 4%.
The label on the Brothers toffee apple cider bottle suggests that it is perfect for when you start drinking around 4.30pm. I don't really believe there to be a bad time to drink cider! I drink responsibly, but I would kind of agree that it makes a good first or second drink when you begin drinking from late afternoon. I usually always drink cider on ice, and the colder this drink gets, the better it tastes. If you have a preference for sweet pear cider then the Brothers' Toffee Apple Cider would be a good drink to try in the apple cider range.
My boyfriend mentioned to me about some apple cider a friend of his has, and he had tried it. He said it was quite sweet, and that, being as i am a bit of a cider drinker( and i have a sweet tooth), that it might be nice for me to try.
Well, the next day, i "happened" to be passing by a certain alcoholic beverage seller...
and i brought this cider and the tutti fruity Brothers cider. (All in the name of research of course)
It comes in a normal green bottle, with a yellow/green label. On the back it mentions that toffee apple cider may be an aquired taste, but i wouldnt let this put you off.
When you first open the bottle, theres not much difference in smell to normal cider, just a slight hint of sweetness. I wasn't sure about how different it would be, so i took a small sip.
I had visions that the taste would be rather sickly sweet, when you think of other drinks with toffee you think of rich and creamy tastes, but with cider, i didnt think i would be able to mix the sweet, and sharp tastes.
It tasted like normal decent apple cider, but with a sweet after taste. It was quite a subtle flavour, and the apple taste still came through. The sweetness didnt overpower the drink( i was worried that it would be just like drinking sugar syrup), but gave a standerd drink an interesting twist.
While drinking you cant really tell that it is different, but as i said the after taste is rather sweet, and sort of lingers in the mouth for a moment. In a way, it allowed me to sort of savour the sweetness.
I like how Brothers havent tried to make the toffee the star of the show, shunning all original taste and have instead, brought the toffee as a perfect side kick to the main hero, which is the apple.
It gave a nice contrast, because the sharpess of the apples cut through the sweetness of the "toffee" and gave it a new dimension.
By how they have approached it, they have ensured that the drink keeps its main identity, instead of getting lost in all of the novelty of new flavours. You know what it is.
While in the shop, i saw an array of other flavours of cider, that i will be trying, watch this space, it is more than likley that more reviews on the other flavours will be popping onto here in due course!
I would suggest that if you like toffee (apples)/ have a sweet tooth and like cider, that you give this a try, also, if you dont like many drinks, and cider is the main of what you drink, or you drink sweet alcoholic drinks, that you try this, it adds some nice variety and is a nice talking point. I will most probably buy this product again in future. Pleasantly surprised by this drink!
I remember a few months back there was a pub me and my friends used to go to all the time - around the time of Halloween & Bonfire night. This pub used to have a special drinks menu for each occassion and me being me I liked to try as many as I possibly could. Every time I went over that period this 'Brothers Toffee Apple Cider' caught my eye and every time I wanted to try it out - but after a few pints to start me off Id forget all about this one and then all of a sudden they stopped serving it. I totally forgot about it to be honest until a few days ago when my mom came home with a few bottles for each of us as she'd remembered how much I wanted to try it - and she did as well so I was well chuffed. Even more chuffed now because this is a delicious drink - Im only sorry my mom didnt buy more bottles!!
Price: Around £2 - 500ml bottle - I dont think the bottles are available in any other size.
Stockists: Most supermarkets [and its on offer at the moment!] & MOST pubs and clubs stock this flavour.
Others in the range: Strawberry, Pear, Apple, Tutti Frutti & Lemon.
Other Info: This flavour was originally released as limited edition but due to popular customer demand it is now available all year round. This flavour is suitable for vegans & vegetarians so everyone can enjoy it.
*No matter how hard I look I cannot find the nutritional information for this anywhere but Im assuming that because of the sweetness and flavour type it isnt very good for you. But once in a while it wont hurt!*
This drink comes in a large, 500ml green glass bottle as one would expect. Out of each bottle you can get at least 2 glasses so I think it good that the bottle is quite large. It has a metal cap at the top like beer which can easily be removed with an ordinary bottle opener - that does mean once this is open you cant put the top back on so unless you want it going flat you will have to drink the whole bottle at once - if your anything like me though that really wont be a problem! The front of the bottle has the brand name, alcohol content & a picture of a toffee apple just in case you were to forget the flavour! On the back is ingredients, servings suggestions, an address for the company etc so any question you have about this drink should be answered on the bottle.
Brothers suggest serving this ice cold - maybe even adding some ice and I have to agree completely - this tastes so much better when its been chilled in the fridge for a few hours it really does do wonders for the taste so chill it for a bit beore you pour yourself a glass. When poured this looks just like normal cider I thought - a light brown colour and is just a little bit fizzy. The fizz dies down pretty quickly which would normally annoy me as I find that usually makes the drink taste flat but because of the sweetness of this one I think thats a good thing - it would be too much for me if it was fizzy and sweet so Brothers got the right mixture here - also with less fizz it means this isnt as bloating as most ciders which again is a nice touch I reckon. Its odd that this one attracted me at all because normally Im not a fan of cider - it just doesnt taste nice in my opinion and I always get way too drunk from drinking it but this one is gorgeous! It smells to me like cream soda mixed with cinnamon which made me think this would taste like a really christmassy drink - one that I wouldnt like as much as I assumed I would. I couldnt have been more wrong.
This tastes AMAZING. The cream soda is the first taste that comes through but then that mixes with the taste of a proper toffee apple - none of the artificial tastes they could have gone foe but this actually tastes like the real thing liquified! This is quite a sweet drink and the taste I dont think will be for everyone but for me it is amazing. The sweetness gives this a nice taste and there is a slight spicy edge to it coming from the cinnamon and cloves contained in it - that normally wouldnt be my thing but all these flavours mixed together really work in this case and they taste absolutely fantastic. Im very glad this was made a permanant flavour because I will be buying this all year round from now on - it has quickly become one of my favourite drinks. I could quite easily drink about 5 bottles of this and probably get quite drunk from that LOL but I think this is a nice drink to chill at home with watching a film - that doesnt mean I wont be ordering this next time Im in the pub though! Cannot recommend highly enough - try it!
