On my mission to try and sample as many Gales beers in the Robin Hood last night I brought this beer on the recommendation of a friend - he said he preferred it to HSB, high praise indeed. I should point out that first opinions were somewhat diappointing as I'd been drinking the far stronger Festival beforehand. So I came back from the Mens to find that a friend had rather nicely gone and brought me a pint of the next beer I was waiting to try. I have to say that my first impression was not that good, I felt that it tasted rather watery but this happens a lot with various beers that I try. However despite of this damning first analysis I stuck with and really started to quite enjoy it. This all ended in me following up with another of the same - in Guildford when I'm in a pub with HSB in, I will not change drinks until I drink them dry. This is the ideal drink when you want a quite refeshing light beer but still with flavour. Usually I find that when I describe a beer as light, that it will usually be followed by 'with a slightly sickly taste', but here there was absolutely no sickly taste much to my relief. If your looking for a beer that is light and can be drunk in largish quantities this is probably a good bet, as it combines all the great characteristics of Gales stronger beers and puts in a lighter and refeshing brew.

Butser is Gales session beer. Named after the hill which overlooks the brewery Butser is a tamer drink than HSB, its big strong brother. This is a lovely beer to drink out in the beer garden on a warm summer's day. It has a nice refreshing taste and won't get you too tipsy. Unfortunately, like all Gales beers it never goes too far from the brewery so you might have trouble finding it in your area. However, if you have a good local real ale pub, why not ask your Landlord if he will consider it as a guest beer, you never know, he might consider it.
