3 Compartment Recycling Bin
Advantages: Simplifies the recycling process.
Disadvantages: The compartments are a little bit to small.
So from October onwards I started separating out all my plastic, card, paper, tins, glass, batteries and aerosols in to neat little piles on the work surface each day and then before bed I would nip out to the bins and put them all in there appropriate places. This went on for a few weeks before my husband finally cracked and demanded a new solution for my little recycling piles, so I then started taking each item out to the bin as and when it became empty I did this for a few weeks until the ice cold wet weather really started to irritate me and the fact that I was making at least ten journeys outside each day was starting to annoy everyone in the house.
I then decided I needed a neat solution to my recycling problem and started to investigate recycling storage options, with my kitchen being tiny (9ft X 11ft) there was very little room for stacking boxes or three different bins so I looked for something compact and that would fit neatly into my kitchen in pretty much the same place as my bin already was.
After scouring the internet for a few days I started to covet a simple human dual dustbin, this bin had two compartments (I needed three) and was exactly the same size as my old bin (45 litre brabantia stainless steel flip top) but the price tag of £89.00 really put me off. I then spotted the 3 compartment recycling bin at Argos for £54.99 this seemed to suit my needs and my budget.
The dustbin itself is quite large height 48.5, width 60.5, depth 34cm but still fitted in the space I had got. The bin is made of silver brushed stainless steel with a black plastic top. The dustbin is separated into three compartments, each compartment holds a 15litre rectangular bucket with a metal handle, and each bucket is very easy to lift out of the compartment and simple to empty, just tip it up in to the larger bins outdoors. Each compartment has a separate flip lid operated by a simple peddle at the base of the dustbin; it is like having three small pedal bins joined together.
When I first unpacked the bin my husband and I debated whether to make labels for each compartment so as everyone would know what went where, we never got around to making the labels and it only took a few days for the kids to work out what went where.
Each peddle has a coloured plastic insert above it, yellow, green and brown, none of these inserts match up to the colours of my dustbins outside and to be honest I think they are a waste of time, the look of the dustbin would have been improved if all the plastic parts had of been black. In the yellow bin I use a swing bin liner as this is what most of the everyday un-recyclable waste goes in. In the green compartment I put washed out plastic, aerosols cans and glass (these are what the larger outdoor bin is allowed in it together) and in the brown compartment I put newspapers and un-waxed card and shredded letters etc. The batteries go in a little bag that I tie to the handle of my larger dustbin outside.
So far the dustbin has stood withstood nearly three months of my family, the peddles are hard wearing and a lot sturdier than they look, this was one of my minor concerns because the peddles looked quite flimsy. The dustbin is easy to keep clean, just wipe over with a damp cloth, and a doddle to empty, a minor niggle is the smallness of each individual dustbin the day to day rubbish one needs emptying everyday, the recycling ones need emptying every other day.
For me the dustbin has solved the recycling problem and is well suited to a small family (currently five) with a small kitchen who produce a lot of rubbish.
Thank you for reading.
