Advantages: cheap, durable, lightweight, does the job

Disadvantages: won't fit in with all kitchens

Asda have quite a substantial range of household items and have a large section dedicated to bits and pieces for the kitchen.

~Asda Plastic Bin~

Asda offer quite a few different bins. This specific design of bin is available in a 15l and 40l size. I have the 40l size which measures 55 x 36 x 30cm. The bin is silver/grey in colour and is made from polypropylene. The bin features a lid which can be lifted up allowing you to put rubbish in. The lid can be fully removed.
This bin is available instore and from www.asda.com. The 40l is currently priced at £7.00. The 15l is £5.00.

~My Thoughts~

When we moved into our current flat around 18 months ago, I went to Asda and Tesco to pick up the essential bits and pieces for my kitchen. We have moved so many times and I always replace certain items when we move. I bought this 40l bin and I'm sure I only paid £5-6 at the time. £7.00 is a decent price considering some of the fancier bins are priced upwards of £10.00.

The bin itself is very basic and is used several times a day. The plastic is quite thick and sturdy yet the bin is incredibly lightweight. Our bin is still in excellent condition considering how much it has been used over 18 months. It isn't fancy and if you have a modern, fancy kitchen, I would go for a stainless steel type bin. We have a regular, council fitted kitchen so this one looks fine.

The bin is the perfect size to be stored in a cupboard out of sight but for convenience, we have our bin under an unused worktop and can comfortably open the lid fully without having to move the bin. The lid also remains open until I close it over which is great when scraping left over food in.

For a family of 3, this bin is the perfect size. We empty ours daily as I hate having any smelly food or other household items in my kitchen for too long. We personally use supermarket or pound shop bought bin bags for our bin. I find the small, scented bags too small for this bin so bin bags are a more appropriate choice. Regular sized bin bags fit neatly into the bin. Due to the wide top of this bin, I occasionally have to 'stretch' a bag a little to cover each side of the bin. Removing the full bin bag is very easy and it is a case of lifting the lid and pulling the bag out.

I spray the bin with a little cleaner after I remove each bag and this keeps the bin smelling a little fresher than it would smell like otherwise. Once a week (sometimes twice), I fill the bin up with hot, soapy water (I use the shower hose) and give it a wipe out. The bin cleans up nicely and any smells are removed. It is easy enough to spray and wipe off any food marks which appear on the bin.

~Conclusion~

This bin has served us well. It isn't as fancy or hygenic (no foot lever to open the lid) but it does its job and is very cheap. The bin is durable and has suffered no cracks or staining in the time it has been in our home. The lid always closes neatly allowing food smells to remain at a minimum. I can highly recommend this bin.

Thanks for reading :)

Summary: a good, basic bin
