      An ideal bathroom bin

Simplehuman produce a range of quality household products and storage solutions but are best known for their bins. I've heard people rave about how much they love their Simplehuman gadgets and products from the range have featured on shows like Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives making them extremely fashionable and popular to own.

I was looking for a silver pedal bin for my bathroom and a search on Amazon brought up the 4.5l deluxe pedal bin reduced to just £6 so I snapped it up. The bin is currently selling for £19.99 on Amazon and on Simplehuman's own website for £24.99 so I got a real bargain.

All buckets are not created equally and this little bin has a number of features which claim to make your life that little bit better. The features this bin has are the non skid base, inner plastic bucket for ease of emptying, a fingerprint proof finish, a flat back which means is can sit against a wall taking up less space, and a durable stainless steel pedal which has been tested to last for over 150 000 steps. Who would have guessed a humble pedal bin could have so many things going for it?

The bin itself looks stylish, I really like the semicircular design and the shiny silver finish. However, despite Simplehuman's claims that the flat back design means that it can sit flatly against the wall I have found this is not the case. This is because of the small hinge that juts out from the back of the bin meaning it sits an inch or too from the wall. I also find that if I place it too close to the wall then when the lid opens it clatters against the wall so it needs to sit a couple of inches back to work properly.

Simplehuman also claim that the stainless steel exterior is fingerprint-proof, in fact when my daughter saw the sticker claiming this on the bin when it came out of the box it was like a red rag to a bull and she started smearing her grubby little paws all over my nice shiny new bin! The bin seems every bit as prone to fingerprint smudges as any other stainless steel surface so this claim does not live up to scrutiny. However, when I polish the bin with my Cif stainless steel cleaner it looks lovely and shiny and bright.

The removable plastic liner is made of a nice solid black plastic and is easy to remove to give it a quick wipe down, the fact the plastic is smooth makes cleaning it really easy. The bin came supplied with Simplehuman's own bin bags which retail at £2.99 for 30 size B liners. The liners themselves are more luxurious than standard pedal bin liners with a draw string top but the bin also houses normal liners or a carrier bag just as easily. The leaflet that came with my bin claimed that it was designed in a way that you could completely hide the bin liner within the bin so it was not showing; another claim that is simply not true. I know the larger bins have a notch in the plastic liner where you can gather any excess plastic from the plastic bag to pull it tight and keep it out of sight but this feature is lacking on the smaller bin.

The bin is obviously well constructed, the steel is a good thickness and the anti skid base works well. The pedal works really well although I won't be able to comment on the 150 000 uses for many years and the lid opens smoothly with little pressure and closes reasonably gently and quietly.

It might seem that I have moaned about all the flaws in my Simplehuman bin in this review but overall I am happy with it. It is a good sturdy construction, looks good and is the ideal size for my bathroom where space is at a premium and there's not much rubbish anyway; its the perfect size that you can fit in a few empty bottles and general bathroom waste without having to empty it constantly and the fact that the lid closes tightly means it holds any bad smells inside till you empty it . Despite the fact that the bin is not smudge-proof and doesn't fit flat against the wall it still performs well and I am confident that the sturdy construction means that it will last a long time so overall I am happy with my purchase.
