Simplehuman Pedal Bin Plastic 40L
Advantages: slim, lockable, wheels, looks good...
Disadvantages: None really
I had been looking for a new bin for my kitchen for a while but thought I would wait until the kitchen had been re-fitted to purchase. All the units are now up and the worktop in place but there's still quite a lot to do in the way of decorating. My husband downed tools and stopped working on this room just before Christmas as we thought it was best to tidy it up and make it look okay for the holiday and then resume work on weekends in January. But we did still buy several accessories for the kitchen and along with these a new bin, which I insisted on buying.
Well a bin isn't really an exciting product to buy is it? But I was determined to purchase something I thought would look good as well as being functional in my 'new' kitchen.
The bin that really took my eye was one by Simplehuman called, Butterfly pedal bin but, even though I shopped around, this came up too expensive. It is priced at £79.48 in B&Q!
I wanted a nice looking bin but wasn't willing to pay as much as that for something merely to put rubbish in. Although, saying that, the bin I did end up buying is still the most I've (until now) paid for a bin at just under forty pounds.
In my kitchen I've chosen some space saving ideas; one that I'm pleased with is a small base unit which when pulled open holds two recycling bins. Unfortunately there wasn't the space for a unit to hold a bin for kitchen waste, other than that which could be recycled.
What I really wanted was:
A bin that was black, grey or sliver in colour but preferably not shiny, as shiny shows up every little mark and I am certainly not a slave to housework; I try to choose low maintenance when possible.
A slimmer bin than my existing one and as the units run differently now the kitchen has been re-fitted. I had just the one good place for the bin. This is at the end of a run of units next to the tumble dryer and near to my French windows. If the bin was too wide then it would be in the way of the doors when both were opened in the summer.
Something that could be opened hygienically and so by ones foot seemed to be the best option.
A medium to large sized bin, with a capacity of around forty litres.
I had a good look on-line first to get a good idea of stockists of decent bins which sold at reasonable paces. This is my usual practice before purchasing; have a look on-line and then go to a store to have a proper look at the item in question and then, either buy from the store or, if a better deal is available from an on-line outlet then I will order from there instead. In this instance I purchased my bin from The Range in Romford, Essex.
I had a good look at bins displayed in The Range and liked a pedal bin manufactured by the company, Simplehuman. I looked to see if I thought it was sturdy and strong enough to cope in my kitchen.
I thought it was better than many similar type bins I had looked at and added to this was the fact that I really liked the way it looked; great for my kitchen.
I purchased the Simplehuman Black Plastic Pedal Bin in a 40 litre size. It was also stocked in grey.
HOW HAS IT 'BIN?'
Now the bin has been tried and tested, opened and closed and moved umpteen times, my thoughts on it are:
It's a good purchase and exactly right for my kitchen. It does fit well in the allocated space and doesn't get in the way. In this space the bin isn't too far away from the sink either, which is good for a kitchen bin.
Appearance wise it is ideal for my kitchen which consists of walnut coloured units with black worktops and accessories in black, silver or granite. The bin is a matt black colour with a little silver on the lid (the lock) and the pedal is also silver.
It holds a lot, having a capacity of 40 litres. It design is deceiving as it actually holds more than it looks capable of. This is due to its streamlined shape as it's a little wider at the front.
The bin can be kept open if the lid is opened to its full extent or will slowly close by itself if left not fully open. There is also a simple slide lock on the lid but I don't use this. If I had a bigger dog or a greedier one then this might prove a useful feature. It could be a useful feature with inquisitive children too. I can't recall needing to lock a bin but can see this could be a useful feature.
Although the bin fits nicely in its given spot it has wheels. These are to the rear of the bin and don't really show when it stands in the kitchen. I don't need the wheels often as the bin mainly stays in its place and has a bin bag placed in it so this is taken out when emptying, however I do think the wheel can be a very useful feature at times and IS definitely useful when the bin is almost full and I need to move it to wash the floor.
The capacity of the bin is just right in my opinion for a home occupied by five people.
An important feature for me is that the pedal mechanism operates easily and well as I have foot strength problems; many household items can prove difficult to use. I find the wide metal pedal opens easily with just a touch of the foot needed to operate it.
I think and hope that this bin will last well. It looks and feels as if it will so, finger crossed!
I use every day black bin bags to line my new bin but bags especially for this bin are available. I find black bin bags are okay and, although they overlap slightly for a secure fit, as they and the bin are black, the overlap doesn't look out of place or unsightly.
