Tesco 50L Large Swing Lid Bin
Advantages: Cheap, sturdy, 50 litre capacity, lightweight so easy to move around
Disadvantages: Swing lid gets a bit messy
A bin isn't the most exciting thing to review, but given the huge variation in the price of bins (some cost over £100!), I thought it was worth reviewing this one as a cheaper alternative which does the job. This is an item which would come in handy for anyone trying to kit out a house on a budget.
==Where and how much?==
The bin can be purchased from Tesco, and is currently priced at £9.82.
==Does a bin have features?==
A bin doesn't really have "features" as such, but let me tell you a few things you need to know if considering buying this bin. Firstly, it is made from plastic (as you'd expect for the price), and is grey in colour. It has a swing lid, although the lid only swings inwards rather than swinging from side to side. It has a capacity of 50 litres, so is adequate for most day-to-day household needs.
The dimensions of the bin are: height 66cm, width 34cm, depth 28cm. It is 1.38 kg in weight, which makes it lightweight to move around when cleaning or replacing the bin bag.
==Would I recommend?==
Although it's not the most aesthetically pleasing bin in the world, this has served our purposes perfectly adequately, and replacing this bin is not something I'm prepared to spend my hard earned pennies on. The grey colour blends in nicely though, and it's quite discreet. It also has matching bits and pieces such as dish drainer and washing up bowl.
Despite being plastic, we've had this bin a couple of years now and it's still going strong. It seems quite sturdy, despite the odd occasion when we've overfilled it (laziness!), or left it outside to dry after cleaning and found it blowing round the garden in a gale!
The swing lid on this bin just slots onto to the bin itself, and I guess the only slightly annoying thing is that it does get a bit messier than an open lid bin. Sometimes it's difficult to avoid getting food on the sloping lid when scraping leftovers into the bin, but this isn't a huge problem as I tend to wipe the lid regularly anyway, to keep flies at bay.
Overall, this is a cheap alternative to those ridiculously priced "designer" bins, and one I would recommend for any household.
