Advantages: Well written, funny and charming
Disadvantages: None
Michael McIntyre is a funny man, this comes across when he is onstage, what also comes across is that he is pretty inoffensive, in many ways you could almost consider him a bland, slightly flacid alternative to more in your face UK comedy acts.
This book is a great introduction to the man and does give you much more understanding of him as a man, his values and his work ethic, which is pretty strong.
The book is 304 pages long and hardback or paperback, it is available in all decent bookstores, most supermarkets and also on Amazon or Play.com. I got a copy in my local Oxfam for £1.99 but the paperback version is now only £4.99 on Amazon.
I really enjoyed this book, because he isn't a stage school kid, or somebody who just got lucky, he's a guy who had to move from private to public school, got into a lot of debt, worked the Edinburgh festival when he only sold one ticket and obviously had a lot of doubts and insecurities.
Sometimes you see other comedians mock him for being safe and mainstream, but his writing has humour and humility without having to resort to nastiness, he is self-effacing and his spirit and humour grow on you, I like him more having read this book than I did beforehand.
The book mixes humour, of growing up with Hungarian ancestry and a very funny Hungarian Grandmother, through discovering the opposite sex (And how complicated they can be), through to trying to get a break, he has worked his nuts off to get where he is and after reading this you won't begrudge him his success.
The writing is humorous and touching, it is really emotive and personable and I thoroughly enjoyed it, ok it isn't the whole life of somebody and is a little bit of a cash-in, but it tells a really interesting and motivating tale which is well worth checking out.
Summary: A charming little book
