Advantages: thoughts on war
Disadvantages: politically incorrect
80 NOT OUT is the title of astromener Sir Patrick Moore's autobiography.
The book glances over Moore's childhood and just emphasises how close he was to his mother and the devastation he felt when she died in 1981. It's good that the book didn't focus too heavily on his childhood.
The book then goes on to centre around Moore's involvement during World War II. The saddest story here was that Moore's love Lorna died during the war and Moore says he could never love again. This is a heartbreaking story and shows the real devastation of war. Moore also talks about his hatred for the Germans since then particularly Hitler. This gives a great historical insight in to what people were really thinking about the war.
Moore moved in to teaching and there are some great tales about schools in this period. Discipline was better in those days and Moore appears to indicate that schools should go back to disciplining children to bring back respect that society lacks today. This provides a great look into the differenences that have changed in society since the war.
Moore then goes on to great detail about his love for space especially the moon. He explains how he got interested in this subject and why he still loves it now. The story about how he got to present the Sky at Night is fascinating and his love for the programme is evident. He talks of his honour at been able to present such memorable events like the moon landing. His work seems to be his reason for living and this really shines through in the book.
Moore says he can barely walk these days and also explains his eccentric manner. There is no doubting that Moore's brain is still working at 80 as he remembers everything and has many a story. There are many heartbreaking stories as well as some hillarious ones. Some maybe offended by his politically incorrect views though at least it shows his honesty. There are some pictures of his career in the book.
At 288 pages this is a book that will keep you gripped.
