Advantages: Not as cumbersome as a large blender
Disadvantages: May be tricky for those with hand / grip problems
I bought this blender for the sole purpose of preparing my own baby food for my daughter, which I did never once turning to a jar of ready prepared. Prior to this my household was blenderless and I have never bought another one.
The blender is mains powered (as opposed to cordless) and the blender shaft is detachable and suitable for cleaning in a dishwasher. The trickiest thing to get off the small rotating blade is minced beef as forms underneath the blade like string and you need to use a sharp knife to get it off. Not a criticism just an observation.
The blender is hand held and operated by pushbuttons located around where the thumb holds. I would say depending on what your grip is like or if you suffered with arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome you might not find a hand blender the best option and a free standing one would be preferable and especially useful for the preparation and chopping of food.
The hand blender also comes with a metal whisk attachment - excellent for whipping cream etc. There is also a self contained chopper this was good for finaly chopping ingredients when my daughter prorgressed into solids and didn't need every morsel completely pulverised and became a more preferable option to mashing (very laborious). And finally a measuring container that can also be used to blender things in. You can use your own bowls to blend things in but unlike a containder blender bits of food can going flying off.
The components go together well and come apart easily. The noise level of the unit I found acceptable. I have not previously owned one in order to compare this to.
A wall mounting bracket is provided with the package - personally I never bothered.
As a baby food preparation tool the blender became an invaluable tool.
Summary: A blender of some sort is essential if you are going to prep babyfood
