“ The Kenwood New York Smoothie Maker is a very versatile kitchen appliance that is great for making soups, smoothies, juices, yoghurts and much more. Although cleaning can be time consuming, it's very easy to use. „
I noticed early on that the tap was a very bad idea and I didn't use it. However, I could see that it was getting black inside where 'stuff' accumulates.
Even worse... food leaks into the base unit-unbeknown to me... until I found maggots coming out of the holes in the base unit, that the plastic jug slots into!! When I 'investigated' further, the whole base unit was RIDDLED with maggots. Honestly, the thought of food makes me feel SO ill!
Believe me, I washed and cleaned the smoothie maker after every use, but this smoothie maker has areas that you can't wash that are being leaked into. The base should be sealed. I feel sick!
I'd like to give it 5 stars for its service because it was good. However, the hygiene issue is just too big a flaw.
It has been a rather long time since i've used this product but the memories of this fantastic machine are very bold.
After countless bottles of smoothies bought from different shops which could never properly please me, i decided to get my hands on this smoothie maker so i could add whatever i wanted to it.
I bought it for just under £30. This price is rather cheap considering the performance of the machine. It comes with a 1.5L mixing container which is attached to a removable rotating blade. The lever to release the liquid from the Smoothie Maker is at the front of it, in the middle. The machine has 3 buttons in a row and 1 on the other side. The Pulse button is the big button which is seperate to the rest of them. From left to right, first comes the off button which really explains itself. The next button is "Mix" which is of course used to mix the ingredients together and the third and last button is "Smooth". As the name suggests, this is used to smooth out the final mixed product.
If you plan on putting the Smoothie into a large glass/cup/container then you may need to tilt it or remove the lid and just pour it in that way as it will not fit vertically under the tap.
Obviously, this isn't a blender so most hard ingredients such as nuts may not blend. Attempting to mix such ingredients as this could break the machine so i suggest that you avoid them. I have made quite a few different types of smoothies/milkshakes myself and the most risky one i've attempted was a Mars Bar milkshake which to be honest, surprised me when it blended properly without any problems.
I highly suggest that when using the machine, you keep your hand on the lid at all times as it can easily come off and has happened to me creating a big mess! Likewise tighten the rotary blades as much as possible as sometimes the weight of the liquid will cause it to giveway, also creating a big mess. The machine does take a while to clean so think about this before using the machine!
The Kenwood New York Smoothie Maker is a great product which is not overpriced and does exactly what you expect it to do.

I am someone who has always struggled with my weighgt and trying to eat 5 fruit and veg a day can prove difficult. But with this I am able to have my daily amount of fruit an vegetables in a tasty way.
It is great for a snack or even a meal ( depending on what you put in it)
This product is great for making health smoothies and also great for making fruity drinks for summer's day when you are need of a refreshment.
It has many different options of how to make the smootie you can blitz the product for a quick blend. There is also a pulse option which means you can just press that button and it kind of revs the blades, to make the smoothie smoother.
It has a leaver which means you can instigate how much of the drink you want in your glass.
The round indent in the smoothie maker allows for a glass to be placed in the the indent so you can pour the smoothie into your glass with ease.
My only problem with the product is that with over use the blades tend to go blunt.
Having only ever had smoothies made for me, giving this a go was great, quick and easy! The maker has a gorgeos silver effect base so will fit in in most kitchens. The 'jug' section has a detachable 3 part blade which cuts through ice, frozen fruits and most textures and consistencies. The lid has a detachable seperate lid so extra ingrediants can be added whilst being used, but be careful it doesnt spray everywhere! It also comes with a handy tap so that smoothies can be poured without having to remove the jug, although for the bottom of the smoothie it may have to be tilted. it does have sepearte functions however they dont seem to actually make much difference. The product is also very loud! I guess it would be impossible to make a quiet smoothie maker, but it resembles a motorbike engine! Aside from this it does its purpose, its cheap and it looks good, and its also very easy to clean!
A few years ago for Christmas my Ex's Mum bought us a Kenwood New York Smoothie Maker. It was probably the first Christmas present we were bought for the home and it was probably also the turning point for me. I knew I would no longer find the Smash Hits annual and a box of After Eights - now it was home appliances galore and I was entering the adult world.
The Smoothie Maker bridged the gap quite nicely as it was still quite a cool toy to play with. In the box, there was the base of the smoothie maker, which is silver coloured, the flex and plug, the goblet, a removable 'tap' attachment, lid, cap and stirrer. You also get a little recipe suggestions booklet.
The base is sturdy; it has rubber feet so it is non slip and it is quite wide so it's stable. It's wipe clean only, which given the silvery finish isn't great, because it marks very easily from most cleaning products. The best thing to do is to use the cleaning wipes you can buy for general / kitchen and bathroom, or window cleaner (Frozen Lime and Vinegar!) believe it or not, as this ensures it remains streak free and looking good in the kitchen. The integrated motor is 3 speed and is strong enough to power the blades to cut through ice!
The Goblet is conical / graduated to ensure that any ingredients you put in to it are drawn down toward the blade. The goblet is great because it is made from acrylic, which means it won't shatter when you throw frozen ingredients in to your smoothies. Plus it's a decent size - 1.5 litres / 3kg will serve around 4-6 people depending on how much smoothie you like to drink! The goblet is also marked with 'fresh', 'liquid' and 'frozen' ingredient fill lines, depending on how many servings you're making. The two way rotating blades are attached to the goblet (and are removable for cleaning, plus they have a removable seal too, so that you can really deep clean the attachment) and these are special designed to ensure lump free smoothies even with ingredients as hard as ice / fruit stones, etc
The removable tap is heaven sent! It features a rubber seal so there are no drips and the special valve means as soon as you let go of the lid, no more smoothie will escape! Plus, as it is removable it's much easier for washing up. Finally, the lid fits securely and has a hole in the middle so that you can add additional ingredients if need be, and so that you can stir as you go. The flex and plug are in splash proof casing as would be expected from a kitchen appliance.
Ok, so once you have popped it all together it really couldn't be easier, you simply add some ingredients then use the 'pulse' button for around 5 seconds x 3, then the 'smooth' button for around 10 seconds. It's dead easy and if you can't figure it out for yourself, the instructions are very useful. Then, you lift the tap and your smoothie will be dispensed like magic! After enjoying your delicious smoothie (subject to ingredients - not product dependant!) you can pull the Smoothie Maker practically into pieces to give it a deep cleanse, this needs to be done after every use, to prevent residues entering your next creation!
Couple of tips:
*Make a Goblet full of cocktail (it blends the ice in with the ingredients for a slush puppy effect), or alcoholic smoothie (kiwi, strawberry, milk and vodka is my favourite) and then use it for parties.
*Before cleaning, put half a cup of water in the machine and pulse just for a second, it will remove most of the residue and make cleaning a bit easier.
*Use small glasses as due to the height from the base to the tap you will be hard pushed to fit a tall glass under the tap, unless you tilt the glass or pull the Smoothie Maker to the edge of the worktop and pour there.
*Do not leave the Smoothie Maker over night to be cleaned - it will take forever and is just so easy to clean straight after use.
*When washing the little tap, ensure you get everything out of the tap nozzle, by pressing and lifting the tap to move the valve whilst washing.
*Use for soups and juices too, they are great using the Smoothie Maker. Plus it removes the need for a separate blender / juicer.
*Drink smoothies straight away, as otherwise they can separate. If this happens, place in a sealed container and shake vigorously.
*Don't bother buying recipe books, the web is full of forums, websites, free recipes for smoothies, or you can just make your own up. My favourite site is www.bbcgoodfood.com (search for Smoothie)
Since I've been back at my Mam's I must admit the Smoothie Maker has been living in the cupboard, just because there ain't any room for the poor thing (my Mam is the queen of appliances) but I've recently (6 months ago) become interested in healthy eating and staying in shape and so the Smoothie Maker was dusted down and brought back out - now standing in between the Grilling Machine and the Coffee Machine! It's particularly useful for the Green Smoothies which are all the rage and because this model is a little older it can be picked up for a bargain snippet price nowadays... so you should treat yourself!
When I was given it, it cost around £35 and that's worth every penny, given I've had it for years and it hasn't even needed a new fuse! Overall a great value 'does what it says' aesthetically pleasing kitchen appliance and one which I would now not be without. When my relationship broke down I left that house with a bag of clothes, my hamster and my Smoothie Maker! :o)

In my never ending quest for short cuts to a healthier lifestyle I have bought and discarded more than my fair share of products including the Kenwood New York smoothie maker. It now sits in the back of my cupboard gathering dust until I take the notion to decide to use it again. To be fair to the smoothie maker it is not that it is a bad product why I no longer use it but more to do with the fact I jump on every bandwagon going thinking I will make great use of a product only to realize 2 weeks later that the thing I have just bought was a complete waste of money as I will hardly ever use it.
About 4 years ago when the latest fad was making smoothies at home I noticed the Kenwood New York for sale in my local safeways and I knew I had to have it there and then, luckily it wasn't expensive, I forget the exact amount I paid for it but I'm sure it was only around thirty pounds.
Assembling the smoothie maker was a piece of cake it as it is pretty much already set up and only requires a little slotting into place out of the box.
It looks like a much more expensive product than it actually is and is made of shiny chrome which gives it really modern look. I would still have it out on my work top as it looks so good if A) I had the room and B) It didn't need constant cleaning to make it remain shiny.
To make a smoothie is also simple as it is literally a case of throwing everything in the goblet replace the lid to avoid any messy accidents and then set the speed. Simples. The goblet has a capacity of 1.5 litres so will make enough for a good few smoothies but this also makes the unit extremely large and quite cumbersome. This smoothie maker has a tap on the bottom so that you can dispense your drink straight into the glass instead of having to remove the goblet everytime you want to pour a drink from it however the tap is positioned to low for most of my glasses so I have to pull the maker all the way to the edge of the worktop to be able to get my glass to fit. Depending on how thick you make your smoothies the tap can also clog up which can be a nuisance.
The blades are really strong so they manage to blend pretty much everything you fancy chucking into your smoothie including ice which is a really good thing as far as I'm concerned. The speed settings mean that everything is blended in just a few seconds and there is a pulse button which I'm not really sure what it is for as it just seems to do the same as the speed buttons.
The noise the smoothie maker makes when in use is absolutely horrendous and at first I thought something must be wrong with the one I purchased as it is that loud but I found out my sisters was exactly the same. Now this isn't just a little whirring noise but more like the sound of a helicopter landing in your kitchen but as it only takes a few seconds to make a smoothie this isn't really a problem.
Cleaning the whole thing every time you use it is also a bit of a pain as it can't be used in the dish washer and you have to disassemble everything to wash and I find I always end up getting bits of fruit all over the work tops.
I'm ashamed to admit that my healthy smoothie for breakfast everyday fad only lasted about a week and the smoothie maker has hardly been in use since but I have found it does come in handy for when friends are over for making frozen cocktails. For anyone interested here is my favourite.
Frozen Strawberry margaritas
Small punnet of fresh strawberries
4 shots of tequila
4 shots of triple sec
The juice of 3 limes
Salt for rimming the glasses
Throw everything in the blender and blast for about a minute and hey presto perfect frozen strawberry margaritas.
Although this blender was probably a waste of money on my part if you like smoothies then I have no real complaints about the Kenwood New York smoothie maker and after 4 years it's still going strong for me but this may have something to do with its lack of use!
First things first, this smoothie maker is not for those with delicate ears. It can reach very loud volumes and is not recommended if you easily get headaches. That's the bad stuff done as the rest of the features just can't be faulted. Firstly it's large meaning you can make a max of four smoothies out of it at a time which is a real time saver. It's also the most easy thing to assemble and takes about a minute to get operational. It has a handy guide on the side of the container stating how much liquid to frozen ingredients ratio you should use depending on the number of smoothies you want to make. Cleaning is also very easy as just a quick rinse of the container is all it needs.
The main selling point however is how easy it is to use. It has 2 settings of mix and smooth, the latter adding a really authentic smoothy feel to the mixture. For larger peices in the mix it has a pulse button which really blitzes your ingredients for one tasty result.
After going on a healthkick, I recieved this as a present for Christmas, and bhoy what a present!
The Kenwood New York smoothie maker is a great smoothie maker, and it can do allsorts of foods. I did wonder why it was called a 'New York' smoothie maker, until I got it out of the box, and could see how big it was! This smoothie maker can seriously hold some food! Its base is also quite big, and takes up quite a bit of surface space in the kitchen, but I dont mind as it looks good quality and stylish.
The smoothie maker itself comes with recipe ideas which are helpful, and there are several different functions on there, depending on how corse or smooth the ingredients you are putting in. When you mix then together, there are different stages you go through, like the pulsing stage.
Now at this point, I feel I should mention the noise it makes..almost like a drill! Definately something to wake you up in the mornings! After it is all mixed, you then can place you glass under the tap, and let the smoothie come out. The tap feature is quite good, although if you have a bigger glass, it doesn't fit underneath, so you have to have to machine hanging off the side of the worktop, or take the jug off and pour it from there, which is normally easier as the tap takes ages for the smoothie to pass through, and normally ends up getting clogged up.
My main problem with using this device though is the cleaning afterwards. It is very hard to clean, and get right into the bottom of the jug where the blade is, and it really puts me off using it. If you consider to make the smoothie, you first have to make sure you have all the ingredients, prepare the food, then turn it into a smoothie, then clean up afterwards-well it seriously takes some time, and it can also be quite expensive, especially when you can go down the supermarket and get a good quality smoothie with no fuss or mess, and probably ends up cheaper!
By far I think this is the best smoothie maker on the market if you are looking for ease of use. It is great for concocting your own recipies with as well as using for the run of the mill. It is a 1.5 ltr which means you can make a job lot of what ever you fancy and keep some for later! It is also very quick and easy to clean. It juices down your indgredients in seconds and smooths like a dream. You can add ice also - Well I have - im not sure if it is a feature but the motor blades handle it well and you can get a nice crush going on!! I have used this also with cocktail recipies as well as ice cream. All in all this is a good choice if you want something that is quick and easy and durable as well!
I have had this smoothie maker for 2 weeks and have used it almost every day since. I only make smoothies for myself so just put enough ingredients to make two smoothies one for breakfast and I put one in an airtight beaker for lunch, still tastes great!
No problems with the cleaning, I don't understand the problems people are having with this, the base comes off easily enough so you can get to all the working parts. I haven't dismantled the tap yet as it shows you in the book but this only needs to be done occassionaly.
Now for the negative. The noise!! This is a really noisy machine, I get complaints from the rest of the family every time I use it. I think in fact Kenwood have discontinued it now and I have written to them to complain about the noise level.
However this is a cheap machine.
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me. I have the Kenwood New York Smoothie SB200 series. Is it possible to dismantle the blade assembly so that I can clean it properly? I wash it carefully after every use but food is trapped and I can not get it out??!! Other wise I am really enjoying it and use it everyday but I really need to clean it properly but have tried everything to unscrew the bottom but am not sure if you can.
The adverts for this smoothie maker just made me want one more and more every time I saw them. The cute dancing fruit across the screen made smoothies seem like a really fun and exciting thing to make, and so off I went to House of Fraser about three years ago to get my new gadget.
The smoothie maker itself was a bit larger than I had expected and can fit well over a litre of contents in the jug. There are markings on the side of the jug to show you how much of which ingredients to put in, which is helpful if you aren't familiar with smoothies. The maker comes with an ideas booklet also just to inspire you!
The base of the smoothie maker is quite hefty although it is very sturdy and contains a very strong motor. It is very loud when making smoothies and especially blending ice, but for the results you get it is probably worth it. There are several functions, such as a pulsing blending action which is like short sharp bursts, or a simple maintained blend. The booklet explains how to use these and it is simple to get the hang of.
The tap on the jug is probably my favourite feature because it makes getting your fresh smoothie the easiest thing in the world. It does drip for a little while after you've used it, but if you leave your glass under the tap for a few seconds after you've finished, it won't leak. There is also a curved gap to fit your glass in, between the base.
The lid for the smoothie maker slides in very well and doesn't make you worry that it will come flying off mid blitz. There is an additional stirring stick that you can use to prod your smoothie a bit if it needs a helping hand.
Cleaning the product is simple as you can place the lid and jug into the dishwasher. I woudl also advise flushing some water through the tap as it can get very dirty otherwise. Cleaning the base is easy enough with a damp cloth.
This smoothie maker looks really good and should suit most kitchen styles. It's also a really good way of getting your five a day! You'll soon be hooked on smoothies!
The Kenwood Smoothie Maker has been an absolute god send for me. I dont know where i would be without it. My mum asked for this as a present so i bought it for her but she only used it once and decided that she didnt want it as she wasnt overly fussed on smoothies, so she gave it back to me. This smoothie maker can hold 1.5 litres of liquid altogether and it has measurement markings up the side. It also has markings up the opposite side to show you how much liquids and ingredients you need to put in, for two people and for four people. You receive a recipe book with the smoothie maker to give you a few ideas for recipes, but you soon get to know different flavours and your favourites as you continue to make smoothies and experiment. There is a dispensing tap attatched to the side, so this makes it very easy to transfer your smoothie over to glasses. The jug and lid are dishwasher safe but i always find this so easy to clean out in the sink, as long as you rinse it out straight away. There is a pulse, off, mix and smooth button on the base. Smoothies are ideal to have at breakfast time as i find im always running short of time in the mornings and to make a smoothie takes me all of a minute, they always keep me full until lunch time. I also used my smoothie maker to puree down all my sons food, i tried a blender but was not happy with the results. So i thought i would give it a go and was really happy with the results, it blended the food down and was really smooth. I would definately recommend this.
WOW! Kenwood New York Smoothie Maker is just fab , we only use ours thou during the summer months. We just generally bung mix of fruit (peeled chopped and de-piped) and ice and whiz it up, kids love them too! It come with a black plastic stick which you use to help loosen wht fruit inside the jug.
The machine is very noisy thou, which does scare my 4 yr old, but after he enjoys his drink. Cleaning out is easy too just fill with water and set it to pulse etc or even just clean it out with a cloth. Mine came with a little recipe book which is also fab you can do cocktails to smoothies great item to have if you have a party. The smoothie maker is a little bulky thou, just make sure you have the space to keep one out as ours is always in the cupboard due to lack of surface area.
I bought mine from a cash and carry so got a little discount think i paid £15 for it, it has 2 speeds and a pluse button which helps loosen all the fruit or ice which sinks to the bottom of the jug.
I got all excited about this product , all the ideas I had. I was going to make the best smoothies and cocktails. I even brought a book of cocktails and smoothies which was going to be my bible
So how often have I used my smoothie maker since the first time. I would at a guess say only around 5 times. I have had this device for around 1 year which I brought in the summer of 2006 when I had all my great ideas.
To begin this product was exciting I brought all the stuff I was going to put in it. Which I might add was a lot of fruit.
I placed all the stuff in the maker , (Once it had taken me a while to work out which bit went where) A ton of fruit later and I had the perfect mix. I got my glass and placed it under the tap. Pulled the tape up and filled the glass to the brim. It tasted lovely.
I then realised I had made far to much so forced my partner to have a glass too which he loved. By this time I still had lots of mix left and no where to put it.
We drunk the rest even though we wished we could save it some where with out the mix going off due to the amount of fruit and money that had gone into the batch.
Now it was time to clean the machine. What a task. You have to dismantle the machine bit by bit and the only way to remove the excess mix is to leave the product in a warm basin of water and return to it at a later time to clean the device with soap.
Now its time to store the machine but where to put it ? It sits in my already small kitchen taking up lots of room and now gathering dust as me and my partner cannot master the energy to make a batch of smoothie.
The smoothie is really nice and easy to make with maybe a little more noise than required.
The fault of this machine is the cleaning and storage. Is all this worth it for a few glasses of over priced smoothie.
I think this machine will continue to gather dust and I will go to the shops and buy an already made smoothie.
I gained this items as a gift after much begging to my partner even though he told me what would happen (it would be left to gather dust).
Overall if you are addicted to smoothies and dont mind a bit of hard cleaning and have a very large kitchen this product is for you.
Myself , I think I will stick to Costa ! Let them do all the hard work ! LOL.
Kenwood New York Smoothie maker is the king of home Smoothie makers / This device is ideal if you have a large family or just plan to become a regular Smoothie fan / This monster has a 1.5 litre capacity and a whopping 450-watt motor / It also has mix, smooth and pulse buttons for maximum control.
