Kenwood SB055 Smoothie 2GO
Advantages: Cheap, easy and practical
Disadvantages: Funny smell if overused
Always one for a new fad, the smoothie craze of about three years ago ensured that I ended up investing in one. This one, the Kenwood SB055 Smoothie 2go. Smoothies being useful because you can put any combinations of food into them, add healthy ingredients, et voila, you can have a healthy and nutritional drink that can be consumed quickly while containing all the goodness and energy of a meal. Health fanatics lapped them up. And put them in their boxes and forgot about them. However, I am glad to stay that fate has not been shared by mine.
It is a simple little device measuring 32cm x 16cm x 15cm and weighing 1.75kg. It runs on 300w of electricity from your wall socket and is made from plastic. There are two main parts to the device. The bottom is the main unit containing the motor which will move the blending blades. Onto this you will fit one of two 0.5 litre plastic cups which serve as the mixing unit. They have screw top lids where you can fix firstly the blade lid to blend the ingredienst, then once satisfied, remove that and replace with a drinking lid if you wish to drink from this cup.
Production of the smoothie is easy. Once you have inserted all of your ingredients into the cup, you affix the blade lid and invert ontt the motor unit. This has a locking facility ensureing the device will not work until you safely affix the cup. This also ensures that there are none of those comedy moments that see all you ingredients spraying the walls. There are two speeds to the blender, which ensure you can mix the ingredients to your liking. Either very thin or a more creamy texture.
It is gauranteed for 1 year. There a couple of minor issues. Firstly being an entry level machine, it's capabilities are limited to soft ingredients so no ice. secondly, it does produce a rather worrying smell if you use too much. The instruction book does state that you should use it for periods of 30 seconds. This smell clears after you have let it cool for a minute if you do lose track of time.
It is easy to use, and provides an enjoyable alterantive. And when you consider that the retail around the £15 mark in most major retailers, it's a good option. Perhaps the best use I have found is for fruit which while not bad, has gone a little soft or mushy. Just mix a couple of these in and a delicious, refreshing and nutritional drink awaits. Very convenient for those struggling to eat their five fruits a day.
Summary: A way of making boring fruits much more exciting
