Directed by James Mangold, '3:10 To Yuma' is a remake of the classic 1957 western.
Starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, the movie tells the story of law-abiding Dan Evans (Bale) who must escort the fabled gunslinger Ben Wade (Crowe) to jail.
Although many people have rated this movie poorly, I personally found it extremely watchable and gripping - even though i've never really been a fan of the Western genre.
The film balances frequent action sequences with slower paced exploration of character which drew me into the well written plot and kept me on the edge of my seat.
Christian Bale is excellent in the movies joint lead role role, and Russell Crowe adds a lot of character to the arrogant 'bad guy' part - the relationship between the two characters works well and is essential for the success of the whole movie.
The creepy looking Ben Foster plays Crowe's sidekick Charlie Prince - who is the real villain of the piece. Foster does well in portraying an epitome of evil, who remains faithful to the cause of securing Ben Wade's release.
All in all I really did enjoy this, but have not seen the original to compare it to. The film is well shot and scripted - in my opinion being the best western made for quite some time.
The stunning landscapes used throughout 3:10 to Yuma are especially beautiful. The movie was shot in New Mexico, and the amazing vistas transfer especially well to the blu-ray format.
The ending of the film, which has received some criticism by a few reviewers, is not at all bad - and without giving anything away, it was a fitting climax to the movie.
The picture of the blu-ray version is superb. Black levels are excellent, and skin tones are incredibly lifelike. I've actually read a review which claims the picture quality on this particular movie is the best blu-ray transfer to date.
There a few extras on the disk - informative bits and pieces which will impress the fans. These come in the form of an audio commentary, theatrical trailer and around seven featurettes.
The disk costs £17.98 from Amazon.
Summary: Great Cowboy Romp
