One thing I have been needing to replace desperately in my house is my DVD player, I have updated most thing except this. However, recently I found a Blu-ray DVD player at a very good price and by Philips, also a good brand so I looked online for more information. I was happy with what it had to offer and it also looked very nice so I was easily swayed and I made the purchase. I don't have a lot of Blu-ray DVD's but it is good to have and I have a lot of DVDs but this is not all this DVD player has to offer which is what I liked.
This DVD player looks very sleek and modern and is fully black so it fits in with my TV set. It has the Philips logo in silver right in the centre of it and and the disc slot is on the left hand side. On the right is the USB port and a digital display to show chapters, time and information on this screen. The DVD player weighs 1.65 kg and the dimensions of it are 435mm (W) x 42mm (H) x 208.6mm (D), it isn't big at all and the weight is fine for a DVD player and it sits perfectly in my TV unit which is ideal.
Right, the first thing to cover about this DVD player is definitely the set up as this is the first thing I had to do. The DVD player comes packaged with a user guide to help set it up, a registration card, a remote control and 2 x AAA batteries. To set this up, I plugged in my HDMI cable which you will need to buy but it is good to have and then depending on your TV set this just needs to be put onto the HDMI channel and it will sync automatically with the DVD player to get picture, every TV set will have its own channel allocated for DVD players etc.
So, one of the first things I liked about this DVD player was the fact that it had a USB port, this is for if you have films on your laptop and you have them on a USB stick you can put it in the port and it will play them off the USB, saving you always using your laptop. This is perfect and you can also use an SD card too to display photos, videos and music, I don't really use this for these purposes but the option is there if you do fancy using it. The playback media accepted is: BD Video, BD-ROM, BD-R/RE 2.0, DVD, DVD-Video, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, Video CD/SVCD, CD-R/CD-RW, CD, USB flash drive, DivX.
Now, to play DVDs on this it will accept region 2 which is right for where we live and it plays them with no problems. The picture quality is very good on this and it is very sharp but I feel this is due to the HDMI cable also. You can do your usual with the remote control, play/pause, fast forward, skip, menu and the remote control signal is good, it always works very easily. When putting on the DVD player you will know it has gone on as it displays 'HELLO' on the digital screen to make it easy to see it is playing.
The aspect ratio on this is 21:9, 16:9, 4:3 and the power consumption is 18W. If you do want to use this to display photographs then it will allow jpeg only and has the usual, slideshow format or zoom, rotate and it can be display from a USB flash drive or a CD-RW, DVD-R. In terms of it playing audio, it will play MP3, WMA, AAC and the sound is supported by Dolby Digital and I find it sound very good. To display you can change the languages as well so it is possible if English is not your first language to change this.
There is a parental control on the DVD player and it has a standby mode also. Now, I am pleased with this when watching films as it does play them with ease, it loads fine and even using my USB it still has a very good picture quality and plays very fast. However, on slight thing I have noticed with this is that the DVD player can be quite loud churning away in the background while playing a film. It isn't extremely loud but on quiet scenes I can hear it turning around and it can be a bit annoying at times.
Now, one last feature I haven't covered is the fact that it has a wireless function. This is really quite a pointless feature and will not work on my DVD player unless I was to get a special USB dongle for it. This is really only for YouTube videos as it states that if you want to watch these on your TV then you can use the wireless feature. The odds of me sitting and watching YouTube videos on this are unlikely so I think I won't bother with buying the dongle. This is not a problem for me as I bought this to watch films.
Philips is a very good brand and I am pleased with this DVD player, I have a few criticisms but overall it is a very good buy. I think it plays films well, and the USB feature is great for me as no longer do I need to watch from a laptop but I can now watch films on my TV that are on my USB it is great. It is a very nice design on this DVD player and it works very well, the remote control is good for it and the batteries last well and all buttons are clear to read. It is ideal for anyone needing a new DVD player with Blu-ray as it is very modern and high quality.
This Blu-ray DVD player can be purchased from Amazon for £69.99 which is a good price. I got mine through Living Social with free delivery for £58 which was a good saving but Amazon's price is still good.
