good product at a good price

Far from being a technophobe I must admit to leaving the purchase of a Blu Ray player a bit late in life. I've been enjoying HD tv for years now so finally bit the bullet and bought a Blu Ray player.
My dilemma was where to start. Like mobile phones and contracts, it's a bit of a minefield out there so apart from the usual "googling" I had a browse on Amazon.
What I like about the site is as you browse you get recommendations for other similar products so therefore narrows your choices down a bit for you. I tried not to get too swayed by all the HD & HDMI jargon, just simply a player that was suitable to my TV's resolution of 1086. I learned that there was no point buying an all singing, all dancing player for £500+ if the resolution on my TV wasn't that of the player. This is what I like about independent reviews and I would say the same in that this product serves my TV very well.
I chose Samsung as my TV is Samsung and know that the controllers are compatible with each other.
The player is very easy to set up & took me all of 5 minutes. As I had no Blu Ray dvd's I tried out a few standard ones and was pleased to see that the playback quality is better than that of a standard dvd. It did mention this in the write up and has proved to be correct.
However, on seeing Blu Ray playback I was very impressed! The clarity and sharpness is perfect. Sound is another issue and this will depend on your set up but my 2.0 BOSE speakers come into their own. Great cinema quality!!
In summary, if this is your first purchase and want a basic player for a good price then go for it. I highly recommend!!

      Okay performance player.

I agree with the previous review. A brilliant clear picture, but i too found it difficult to combine a Hisense HDTV with a Samsung BlueRay. For older movies/series, I found the same square resolution to many of the movies I played. I too, will go back and get a DVD player. This to side, A good all rounder Blue Ray for BlueRays only. good all round device. but comes configured as zone 4 only. so I will be taking it back to the shop for a multi-zone player instead.

Even in an age when media is increasingly streamed to mini boxes like Roku and Apple TV, a disc player is still a must-have for those who already own a cache of discs. Thankfully, all Blu-ray players double as streaming-media boxes, too, so you can have your cake and eat it too.

To that end, the Samsung BD-F5900 is an affordable machine ($120) that offers almost everything you need in a disc player and a "smart" set-top box, with overall performance being a standout. This is the quickest player CNET has seen up until this point with the trade-off being that it also uses more electricity in its fastest, Quick Start mode. You do get to choose between pure brawn and power-saving brains, though.

Picture quality is very good and the interface is uncluttered and easy to use. The player comes chock-full of features and many of them are quite useful. In essence, it gets most everything right.

There is very little to dislike about the attractive BD-F5900. It's one of the best Blu-ray players available at the price, and should serve disc and streaming-media fans equally well.

      • "Great sound and image quality"

      Disadvantages

Great product, amazing sound beautiful picture quality!

Before I bought the bluejay player, I've got to admit I didn't know what the fuss was all about and have to go admit wanted to be old school with my dad player, but once I've gone blue don't want to undo! It's amazing, not only is the picture quality beautiful, they really do mean high deffenition! I can see close details on faces, really changed your whole movie experience, but the sound is so clear, not muffled like with the dvd player, almost feels like the actors are in the same room, for example when watching action movies and horror movies, it builds up more suspense and makes them more terrifying and exciting to watch. Great for the family or if your just wanting a quite night in. I also like the feature of being able to go straight to the main menu instead of having to flick through all the adverts, that's one flaw of having a DVD especially when you can't find the remote! But the good thing is about it, is if your in the select few who enjoy watching the adverts and trailers you can watch them as there's an option in the main menu, as well as being able to watch the trailer of the movie if your wanting to build up the suspense before the movie begins to get you excited. It's great it really is I've had no problems so far. It came with fast delivery, easy instructions to follow, the only problem is, is that there just aren't enough films on blue ray, but the good thing is, is that it won't be long til everyone turns to blue :)

      Disadvantages

      Great picture

This was a replacement player that i received after ny BP-1500 failed and stopped playing discs. If you buy a Samsung product make sure you keep your receipt as the only way to get service under warranty is to provide the original receipt, if you have not got it, then they will not process the claim. You have been warned. The whole process took nearly 5 weeks from taking the player in to get the replacement.

Lets hope this ones lasts more than 7 months!!!
This model has great style and looks really good and goes well with any product.

Make sure you buy a HDMI lead as this is not supplied!!
The USB port on the front is great for updates and DIVX stuff that should be availible soon.

I have mind connected to my router as this is the easiest way to update the firmware.
Overal the samsung has a great picture and i would say get a blu ray player but have a look at other brands

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Im livin the blu ray dream

I have been always been highly interested in the new technology and had wanted to embrace HD TV quite early on. however a combination of late delivery of our HD ready TV and Sky being short of HD boxes when HD launched meant we never quite got round to it.

I dragged myself into stores to see how amazing HD pictures were but I never really understood it to me it was nothing like the improvement in picture quality you got when switching from analogue to digital TV - so I didn't really bother with it.Any further thoughts I have had on getting Sky HD died when I did, and I had been quite happy with my current TV set up until quite recently. My son, who seems to have adapted a love of new technology from me, wich i suggested it would be good to get a Blu-ray player and at first I resisted on the basis of cost alone. However in the autumn of last year I noticed prices were starting to come down on Blu-ray players and this made me a bit more interested. What tipped me in favour of buying one was the release of Harry Potter, classic on the format - this is one of my sons favovrite films and it was available in a DVD and Blu-ray combi pack which seemed a good option when I went to buy it.So it came to pass that my Christmas present to myself in 2009 was the Samsung BD-P1580 Blu-ray player and what follows is the idiot's review of it.Put simply, a Blu-ray disc has far more storage space than a regular DVD, meaning there is little or no need for compression or compromise on picture and sound quality. As a result the quality levels are quite obviously improved upon that experienced on a regular DVD.

Blu-ray however will only work fully if connected to a HD ready TV and Blu-ray discs will only play on a Blu-ray player.Like ordinary DVD, there are region codes for Blu-ray.Apart from the player itself you get a Composite Audio cable, a remote control and batteries for same and the user manual.Crucially, an HDMI cable is not included and you will need this to connect the player to your TV. You can also connect the player using a DVI cable for HD pictures or if you merely want better quality pictures you can use a TV Component lead or a bog standard TV Video lead.HDMI cables can vary wildly in price and my recommendation would be to shop around for one if you have decided to buy a Blu-ray player and wish to connect using one as you can find yourself being charged seventeen dollars in the U.S for something that turns up in Poundland.I chose this Blu-ray player because I needed a player that I could hook up to my home cinema system.Had I had a bigger budget, my dream Blu-ray player would have been part of a Blu-ray home cinema system, but at 550 U.S dollars this was totally off limits.I have a Panasonic home cinema system which is about a couple years old now and the sadpredates HDMI slots, meaning you can't get the full benefit of the improved sound quality Blu-ray offers, however having done some research I realised that the Samsung BD-P1580 should connect quite easily using a traditional composite audio cable.Similarly this player has a USB socket at the front, which offers another way to add firmware updates to the player but also enables you to view JPEG pictures on your TV and also to view DIV-X video files.Setting this up was a piece of cake - as time goes on it seems technology is designed to be easier to deal with. I used to dread getting a new video as tuning them in was a nightmare back in the days of analogue TV, but now in days everything seems to be self tuned and almost plug in play in design. The Samsung BD-P1580 is no different - I connected the player to the TV via an HDMI lead and then connected the audio cable to my home theatre systems and voila - it was up and running. My TV even automatically detected I wasn't running the player via an AV channel and went directly to HDMI.During the set up process you set the time and date, the language required, ensure audio is set to digital output, add the player to a network and place parental locks on the player if required. This is very easy to do using the remote control. The special effects were particularly impressive on Blu-ray but I was also struck at how clear leaves on trees were and how vibrant the rural locations appeared with lush green grass and sparkling blue skies. This was something I really picked up on the Blu-ray edition of "Dirty Dancing" - another film which features a rural location and had individual blades of grass clearly visible. On both of these films the sound quality is dramatically improved upon what has gone before too - we own both these discs on regular DVD and the clarity of sound is far better on the Blu-ray discs. You can also play CDs and regular DVDs along with a selection of rewritable DVD/CD discs on this player. If you play a regular DVD it automatically "upscales" the picture quality and while it isn't in true HD, the picture quality is improved from what you get in your normal DVD player. You can use this a couple of times but the problem I have is that I have a lot of Region 1 discs and the Samsung BD-P1580 only plays Region 2 discs and I am also unaware of any hack available for it. If you have a lot of Region 1 DVDs and are interested in purchasing this player my advice would be to keep your regular DVD player hooked up to the TV too.I haven't done any firmware updates yet either - there seems to be some debate about whether you should update your firmware via the Blu-ray live feature and ensure it is always up to date. Some Samsung users have experienced what they call "bricking" - which basically means your player is rendered useless by a firmware update containing errors. It's also worth bearing in mind that your player may stop functioning without firmware updates so it's not something you can avoid really with a system that is evolving all the time.Thy controls on the front panel of the Blu-ray player is the design they can be hard to see however they seem to be embossed making it easier to find by touch. All the controls you need are on the remote control however. To begin you insert a compatible Blu-ray disc and wait for it to load. Blu-ray machines take a little longer to read the disc so be patient - I find discs load on this player within about 30 seconds. After you have done that you operate the player as you would with a traditional DVD player, choosing either to play the entire film or select specific scenes or watch extras. My son is so attatched to subtitles and refuses to watch anything without them either on DVD or TV, and there can quite often be a small, but visible, the shaddow around the subtitles, and also on credits on the screen. The shadow vanished on the Blu-ray player, leading to the clearest lettering I have ever seen on my super awesome plasma. The second thing I noticed was how vibrant the colours were on the screen, giving a film that is over 70 years old an almost new look to it.The sound quality on this old film isn't up to the standards we expect from more recent releases however and I didn't notice any particular improvement as a result.I have since picked up some more films on Blu-ray and it's on some of the more recent releases I have really noticed a marked improvement in both picture and sound quality.Another nice touch offered is the remote control can be programmed to work on some TVs. It will automatically work on a Samsung TV, and codes are available to programme it to work with other brands. This isn't guaranteed to work but it's easy to try by simply holding down the "TV power" button and entering the code for the brand of your TV. Sadly this didn't work with my Panasonic TV - it registered the code but still didn't work unfortunately.Picture and sound quality are definitely a step up from regular DVD on Blu-ray and this increase in quality makes moving up to High Definition worth doing if you enjoy films and buy or rent a lot to watch at home.It is the ease of use which makes the Samsung BD-P1580 a real winner for me however - as a complete novice to Blu-ray when I bought this player I was a little concerned that set-up might be too complicated for me, even though I do try to keep up with advances in technology as much as possible.I highly recommend it for everyone go and buy it now its time to live the blu ray life.

First Blu-Ray Player? This one is the dream :)

Movies come to life with Blu-ray thanks to Full High Definition 1080p picture quality, and next generation HD sound. The BD-P1580 combines superb movie playback with great connectivity thanks to BD Live capability, Wireless Connectivity (Wifi Dongle required) and USB host play. Blu-ray is the perfect way to make the most of your HD TV.

Digital images are made up of pixels. The more pixels the image is made up of, the clearer, more detailed that picture becomes. Blu-Ray players' output images at Full HD 1080p generating vividly realistic images with outstanding clarity. In addition to this, Blu-ray players are capable of outputting High Definition sound for the ultimate movie experience. Your movies will literally be brought to life with Blu-ray.

The USB host feature allows direct playback of music, pictures and video from USB devices to your Samsung Blu-ray player. With USB host you no longer need to move contents to a PC and burn them into a CD or DVD before playback. Simply plug-in your digital camera, MP3 player or other USB devices and enjoy the content immediately.

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) eliminates the need for multiple cables. It is a digital connectivity standard capable of transmitting the highest quality uncompressed HD digital video and audio content, all through a single cable.

The blu ray player is amazing, it is crystal clear and will play in 1080p. My only worry was when i first went to watch a blu ray it didnt play i tried about 5-6 discs. I then put in a dvd and that played and went back to trying a blu ray and they all worked....no problems since.

Essential budget Blu-Ray player - perfect for the kids

If you haven't already caught onto the Blu-Ray trend, this Samsung BD-P1580 player could be the perfect reason for you to get on board. Ask anyone with a TV compatible with Blu-Ray and a Blu-Ray player and they'll tell you, usually, two things:

      1) The picture quality is remarkable and will make you wonder why you ever had DVDs
      2) The player can be a little slow at times

We have an older television for the children, so perhaps that is the reason this Blu-Ray player acts up sometimes with the TV connection - either that or one of the kids have meddled with it and not told us! That being said, the Playstation 3 works absolutely fine with the old television, so we suspect it is our player, or some communication issue the TV can't handle. When the player works - which it practically always does - it works perfectly, and faster than the Playstation 3's player which we have found to be unusually slow at times.

The price is obviously a key draw to the player, which doesn't compare to the ridiculous prices one can pay for a 'better' one. The cheapness of the price means that we aren't too concerned about damage as we would be with a more expensive player. It eases the mind for sure, even though we treat it well anyway!

The player is beautifully designed considering the under £50 price point, and looks great underneath the television. We found we couldn't fit the player in our DVD and Blu-Ray cabinet, as it is quite long and large (like a slab), but we picked up a TV stand for cheap in IKEA which fits the player perfectly.

This model of Blu-Ray player - our third player if you count the PS3 - is definitely a nice little buy. It won't break the bank, although a quick Google has made me find that it perhaps isn't in as big supply as it was before. Can still be picked up for around £30 on eBay, however.

      blu ray player
great product . easy to set up. and what a great sound experience when connected to home theatre system. It is a Which best buy and certainly deserves the title. Recommended

The picture and sound on this samsung blu-ray player is brilliant, i would recommend this 100%

If you are however looking for a MULTI REGION dvd/blu ray player this one WILL NOT work, there are lots of codes out there to try and make this one multi region for dvd. Trust me NONE of them work. If your going to import Blu Ray films make sure they are Region A,B & C and then they will work fine.

The firmware updates download quite slowly aswell if you use the player itself, it has a USB port on the front of it so it is possible to download the update onto your PC and then add it to a flash drive and install that way which saves a lot of time.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

One of the best blu ray players on the market.

This player is definitely one of the best on the market today, no doubt about it. The quality of the video output is fantastic (will play in 1080p), never skips and has never once failed to read a disc. Not to mention the aesthetics. This will definitely go really well with any TV and stand. Being black it tends to blend in well.

Ease of setting up: This was a really easy product to just set up and use right out of the box. Plug it in, put it where you want it and that's about it.

Video output: Great video output you just won't get with some of the cheaper players. This has full HDMI support and will output at 1080p. It does take a minute to recognise and begin outputting the video, but that is quite a small grievance considering the price.

I got this player after having owned a normal dvd player for many years, and I have to say that the difference in picture quality is immediately apparent. There is no comparison between standard dvd and blu-ray, and no way to really describe it either, you just have to experience it for youself.

If you are reading this, you are probably finding it quite difficult to decide on a player. This is definitely the one you should get. I don't think there is anything else on the market at the moment that will get you the picture quality, easy of use and affordability that this will.

A Blu Ray That Works Better Than Most

If your like me then you will remember the days when to watch a movie there was a very high chance that when you put the VHS in the player you would have to wait until its rewind to the beginning and then have to put up with a shaky and low definition screen. That seems like a hundred years ago comparing to the technology of today. In the past year I have had two different Blu Ray players that have broken down in a short time frame so I gave up with them and decided to trust the laptop which I connected to the TV via the HDMI port. Then my wife decided that me taking over the laptop and TV at the same time was too much so she went out and bought me the Samsung BD-P1580 and declared that after extensive research this was a machine that wouldn't break down on me. I didn't believe her at first but after a few months with the machine it is still running like a dream.

Set up of the player is very simple and the layout of the menu and settings couldn't be made any easier to use. The movies load up very quickly and the quality of film is amazing as always with Blu Ray. The only negative I have with this player is that it is a bit bigger than my previous two and stands out a lot more than the others but in it looks good in the unit and most importantly it works and stays working.

The machine will also play MP3 music files as well as giving you the ability to stream photos and videos via CD or the USB port which also plays AVI & DivX movie files.

Overall this is an excellent Blu Ray player that I would highly recommend.
