“ Samsung BD-P1600 - Blu-Ray disc player - Upscaling - black gloss „
Have had this blu-ray player for 5 months now, purchased it from Argos at £100.00. Great deal indeed.
The build is good, slim and light, will fit perfect on any shelf and has a nice design to it, at first look you can see that the disc drive is hidden behind the front panel, which is good if you have children as they can tend to stick objects in places they shouldn't, most importantly there is no bottons as these too are hidden behind the front panel.
When you power the player on for the first time, it very easy to setup, not much to do really, when ejecting the disc tray you notice that the front panel flaps down half way in an angle with the disc tray sitting outwards, you put your disc in and press eject and the drive dissapears into the player closing the front panel behind it, it looks fancy and gives it a very modern future like look. As metioned above, hidden behind the the panel are bottons, these are touch sensetive that control, eject, play, standby, rewind, stop and forward. Also behind the front panel you will notice a USB port for playing all your media..
On the back of the player your connections consist of, 1 HDMI port, 1 Digital Optical Audio Output, 1 LAN port and 6 Output Component, there is even a small builtin fan to keep your system cool.
When it comes to how quick the player loads blu-ray disc, it is fast enough, it all depands on the size of the information on the disc. The player can play DVD formats including, DVD-r, DVD+r, DVD+DL.
The player can aslo play various video files like, Divx files, Mkv files all of which you can put onto a disc or put on a storage device, such as a USB pen drive. The quality of HD movies are very good, also when you watch a normal standard dvd the player will upscale the video that best suits your TV which is very good as you get a more sharper and colourful picture. The sound is good, although you need to link the player up to a surround sound system to get the full experience.
The remote is easy to use and every botton is laid out properly, but there is a few smaller bottons some people may find hard to see and use.
Another good feature, this player can connect to the interent and get new important updates for your system and are able to connect to youtube and watch videos through the player onto your TV
Would highly recommend this product as its good value for money with many features.
really wanted a new Blu Ray player to play home videos on in high definition. It was fine connecting my camcorder to the TV but it became a chore and I began to envy friends who could play Blu Ray discs so I decided to purchase one myself.
I chose Samsung because having used a lot of equipment owned by them I know that their quality is excellent and the price tag is never too extravagant. This model will cost you 200 pounds on the moment on eBay but I actually got it for 120 euro on sale in January so be sure to shop around and grab a bargain.
The design is really sleek with its glossy surface. My TV is a Philips and has the same glossy design so they look well together. There is a flip down panel on the front of the box which holds the controls and I find this excellent because my two year old has a habit of going up to our tv and pressing buttons but she cant figure out where they are on this player!
As for the quality of this device, it is touch and go at times. It can play DVD's aswell as blu ray discs and it does improve the quality of the DVD compared to a standard player but I did find with movies I had downloaded online onto a disc that there was audio lag and the screen froze a few times so it made it impossible to watch the film fully. I never had problems with blu ray discs but it just didnt seem to react well to self made DVDs in my case.
I thought this was a pity because for this price I expected a flawless playback. Still it is excellent with my HD tv and the picture and sound is amazing in conjunction with blu ray films but I wouldnt recommend this if you like to download all your own films.
If you want a straight forward blu ray player then you cant go wrong with this. Just dont expect too much from it because you will be disappointed.
We initially purchased this blu ray player because we had a Samsung TV and we like our equipment to match though the TV ended up packing up and we went for a different brand but that is a completely different story!
We purchased this at the beginning of the year and it cost us £155. It is a really nice looking blu-ray player with a nice glossy black finish to it. It looks really nice when it is set against a TV of the same type of finish. There is a small Samsung badge which is silver and Blu Ray is written on the front as well.
The front of the blu ray player is deceiving as it makes you think that there are no buttons but it is really clever and stylish as if you press the front of the blu ray player the front flips down to reveal all the controls. The bit which flips down is a little bit on the thin side though and we do worry about putting too much pressure on it so we are just always careful with it. It has been fine though touch wood.
You do need a HD TV to see the fine displays of picture quality this player produces and you will also need an HDMI cable. The picture quality when combined with a HDTV is truly breathtaking. There are things I have seen in films we have watched again that I never realised were there in the first place because the picture is now so clear and "clean" if it is possible to use that as a word in this instance.
The player plays DVDs as well as blu rays. DVDs are played in a better quality than they would normally be if played on a standard DVD player as this Samsung blu ray player upscales them for better picture quality. This is really noticeable and makes DVDs look alot clearer. If you have region 1 DVDs then you can track down a multi region hack for this player but note this will only make the player mutli region for DVDs and not for blu rays.
The blu ray player supports both audios of Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD.
We did have an issue with this blu ray player when my husband downloaded an update for Terminator Salvation which caused the whole thing to freeze up. I am not sure what caused this - my husband is more of the technical update geek in regards to blu rays! One thing that does annoy me about this blu ray player though is that it constantly needs to be connected to the internet to do live updates. It doesn't just do it every now and then but what seems like all the time and it is part of the reason we are looking for a new blu ray player.
It is okay as a blu ray player and great for if you are starting out. Looks wise it is really nice and looks great when put with our other equipment but the need for updates all the time really lets it down. So much so I will only award it 2 DooYoo stars which is a shame.
This device is a must have for all technology enthusiasts and movie lovers that want a cinema experience in their own home. This blue ray player is perfect for your plasma TV or led high definition TV to get the full experience in sound and picture.
The price of it is very cheap and affordable and it is full of great features. You can plug in usb devices to play music and movies without having to rely on discs all the time.
The features are very simple to understand and use and the navigation menu is very simple also.
In terms of quality and sound it is superb and blue ray discs make the picture look amazing and very life like. its like looking through a window.
The player is very reliable and i have been using it for a few month and never had a technical issue. Best of all the player looks great and stylish which matches my Samsung led TV and black TV cabinet!
Overall i highly recommend this device to any one wanting to play blue ray movies in a easy to use manner.
I've owned this particular model now for nearly one year and on the whole i'd have to say i'm fairly pleased with it. I've given it only three stars and i'll explain that later.
Firstly the unit itself. Measuring 17"x2.13"x7.83" it'll will blend in nicely with most if not all Fully HD LCD tv's. A glossy black cover is a nice touch as it flips down to reveal the tray and buttons. Herein lies the first of my gripes. It's flimsy and over time, it's going to weaken and eventually it won't close. And having the front down permamnently is not a good look!!
Using a HDMI cable, you get all the regular features you come to expect from a BluRay player these days. Also with the help of Google, you can locate the code for making this a multi region dvd player. However, despite what you may read it cannot be used as a multi-region bluray.
The second gripe I have concerns the USB port on the front. Why would you need a USB port you ask. Simple it needs updates. Frequently. For some reason Terminator: Salvation caused a lot of problems for this machine. Again Google will go into more detail. The actual process of downloading the update to a USB stick and uploading to the player is relatively easy and will take no more than half an hour. The problem is why should you have to?
In short this is a base level player. It is your first player because if we're honest it won't a) last too long and b) you'll get fed up of the constant updates. My advice buy it, learn about HD and what's important to you and then start searching for your first proper BluRay player.
This is my first Blu-Ray player, I bought it specifically because I love the movie Avatar and was desperate to see it in HD.
I was a little concerned when I bought it as I had read a lot of bad reviews about this model being glitchy but as it is a budget model and can be picked up for £100 or less if you shop around I thought it was worth the risk. I'm very glad I took that risk as this Blu-Ray player is fantastic.
When I got it out of the box the first thing I noticed was how light and shallow the Blu-Ray player is. It took moments to connect to my Samsung TV and immediately synchronised with the TV so that the remote controlled both the TV and Blu-Ray seamlessly. Once connected to my router (I used the cable provided however you can plug in a wireless USB dongle at the back) the Blu-Ray player automatically looked for software updates which admittedly took an age however I have updated several times since and each of these updated have taken no more than 5 minutes. Flicking through the menu everything is very user friendly and easy to figure out without having to resort to looking at the instructions. You can also get onto YouTube through the menu however having had a quick look at this it seems a little pointless and clunky, I don't think that anyone who has a computer connection would want to bother using this feature. This model also has BD Live but I've yet to figure out how much value this adds.
On playing DVD's the up scaling is impressive, it makes even old movies look far sharper but where this player excels is unsurprisingly playing Blu-Rays. The picture quality excels by far my expectations with crystal clear unbelievably detailed picture that leaves you feeling more like you're looking through a widow than watching a movie. At one point just after I bought the player I paused a movie to get a cuppa and found myself drawn right up to the screen because I just couldn't believe how clear the image was. The sound is also superb and again crystal clear.
There are some bad points about this player though. Firstly it has a flap that closes across the front. I imagine the designer thought that this made the player prettier by hiding the controls and CD draw but it's just pointless and you have to remember to open it before opening the draw. It does however give the player the same finish as my TV so I suppose it does what it's supposed to. The second down side is the sound the player makes when loading a disk, it's ridiculously loud and sounds similar to the noise the little cars you used to get in Kinder eggs make. It is very annoying but on the other hand once you press play the player is completely silent which is a 1 up on my old DVD player.
So to sum up, in my opinion this is a brilliant little piece of budget kit which works perfectly with my other Samsung products and plays Blu-Rays faultlessly, but if you've got money to burn I think it would probably be worth going with the next model up.
I got this as a present from my wonderful girlfriend for Christmas, and i could not be more pleased with it. I am an absolute HD geek and anything related to it i want, so this was an ideal present for me. She also got me a top of range HD cable to get the absolute best out of the player.
Aesthetically it is absolutely gorgeous and matches my Samsung TV perfectly its glossy black with a deep red mahogany edge the same as my TV. Its the usual width of most players etc, but not very deep which is really good, if you don't have a deep TV cabinet.
Feature wise it is packed with everything you could possibly want from a Blu Ray player and more! extra features that i hadn't even heard of are Blu ray disc Live, which updates your movies with new extras and all sorts of stuff as soon as you insert them. It is wireless LAN ready, which means all you have to do is plug in a wireless Usb dongle into the back of it and it can connect to your network and the Internet to download firmware updates. The best feature that i think is really cool is that it has 1gb of on board memory and you can download YouTube videos and save them to it. This is good, if you wanna watch YouTube on in your living room or wherever you have your TV.
To get the most put of this player i do recommend matching it with a Samsung TV, as they communicate together using something called Any net + but they always work in sync. for example if you turn on the blu ray player, it Will also turn on the TV and turn it to the correct channel ready to watch your film. This works in reverse with turning it off. As well as on your TV, you can just switch to Blur Ray on your source list and it turns the player on.
Graphically i cannot fault it, the pictures are pristine, its like looking through a window into another world. The sound is also a lot clearer and you cant really understand what I'm describing till you see and hear it yourself. Next on the list of purchase is a surround sound system for it, to push it to its full potential.
Overall I'm am well pleased with this player and would recommend it to anyone. So far i have had no problems and it ticks all the boxes, I've not had it for a long time, so i cannot rate it for how well it survive's the test of time. If i do have any problems in future i will edit my review with them.
