Sony BDPS4100 Smart 3D Blu-ray Disc Player
I bought a 3D HD television back in January and decided to add a £D Blu-ray player into the mix to utilise the 3D TV features. I was looking for a cheap but quality player and kept an eye on the Sony Outlet website for a few weeks for a 3D Blu-ray player to become available. The outlet website is basically for items returned to Sony with opened packaging, I have always found products to be like new but up to half the price of a brand new item and you also get a 1 year Sony warranty with them, so it is worth checking out. The website address is https://outlet.sony.co.uk.
The Blu-ray player comes in a large heavy duty cardboard box as you would expect with any electrical item. The player is held in place inside with polystyrene pieces and the remote and instructions are below this. My box had been opened already, as it was from the outlet store, but all of the inside bags and plastic coverings were untouched and protecting the player.
The box contains:
2 x AA Batteries
The Blu-ray Player
The Blu-ray player looks very stylish and futuristic in my opinion. It is made of a shiny black reflective plastic material, which does look great, however it gathers dust very quickly. The plastic material also makes the player very lightweight and I do not think that this a good quality for an electrical item, I find that it makes it feel a bit cheap and not very well made. However I don't find myself picking it up very often and it looks good on my TV stand. The design is an angular, streamlined and rectangular box player. There are four diamond shaped button to the front right of the player, these are Open, Play, Stop and On/Off and the Sony branding in silver to the top of the player.
The Blu-ray player is very easy to set up, you simply plug it into the mains and use a HDMI cable to connect it to your television. Gone are the days when you get free cables with electrical items, but you can pick one of these up on Amazon for a couple of pounds. I had been told that it is best to get a decent HDMI cable for using a 3D player and if possible a gold plated cable for speed and quality purposes, again these are under £5. Once plugged in you can simply switch it on and go, the start-up time of the machine is nice and fast. The player also has a USB port for you to play downloaded films and music.
The player has a small remote control that is full of buttons, half of which I don't know what they do! I use it for turning the machine on, play and pause functions. This is a Smart Blu-ray player however, and so if you are going to be using it for going on the internet and for apps then I suspect the remote will be better utilised. This has the Sony Entertainment Network installed which allows you to access many features and apps. This player is Wifi ready, but you need an Ethernet cable or a wifi adapter to connect it to the internet. If you are going to be utilising these features a lot it would be better choosing a Blu-ray player with wifi already installed, which are slightly more expensive machines. For my personally I use my Smart TV for YouTube and the like so I have not purchased an adapter.
On first viewing putting in a standard Blu-ray disc into the Sony player I was really impressed with the picture quality. It is sharp, crisp and very good quality. The player also upscales standard DVDs to near HD quality; again this is quite an obvious improvement compared to watching on my older Blu-ray player. The Sony machine has Triluminos display, which is Sony's colour technology that brings intensity and depth to your Blu-ray by reproducing the true and natural shades of colours that are often difficult to replicate on screen. I can vouch that the colours look extremely good on my TV and again I can tell the difference from my older Blu-ray player. Watching a 3D Blu-ray through this machine and on my 3D television is a truly awesome experience.
Overall I am really happy with this 3D Blu-ray player, it looks good, is quiet and fast with great upscaling and picture quality. My only gripe is the cheap, plastic design which although looks good does not feel quality. I paid £60 for this on Sony's outlet store a few months ago, they are currently on Amazon for £79 which is a great price for a good quality 3D Blu-ray player.
Summary: A reasonably priced great quality 3D Blu-ray player from Sony
