Advantages: Easy to play
Disadvantages: Noisy
I have always been a fan of Scrabble where time wasn’t against you, however Boggle was a game that I never liked as a child, because I couldn't compete (i.e. win) against my parents and older sister. Now I love it. Therefore I suggest that the optimum age range is 40 (actually, I have been enjoying it for the last ten years, so there is some flexibility here). The game is durable, as long as you don't step on it, but be aware that it is very loud, for 10 seconds once every ten minutes, (That is a warning to parents before purchase, but also to anyone who likes to play games at night.) As the plastic dice are vigorously shaken in the plastic container! It is very educational: a good reading and vocabulary skills game. This game allows you to throw all caution to the wind as you seek out chains of letters that make words of 3 or more letters in length. Shaking the letter dice makes it virtually certain that no two rounds will ever be the same -- there are simply too many The object is to make as many words as you can in a set time period using the egg timer provided, using letters that are next to each other, horizontally or vertically. The words are written down and compared at the end of the game, each word that has been written down by more than one player is crossed off, the only words you score with are those which the other players have not got. The longer the word then more points you score. If need be it is also a game that you can allow your child to score points at by "not seeing" some of the more obvious words that you know they will get.A great boost to their confidence. However, against adults the competition can get intense, and there is also the chance to learn new words as you strain to come up with likely combinations that actually ARE words. That's how I learned such helpful words as Vivo, Xyst, and Zurf. This game is affordable, immediatel
y playable, and lots and lots of fun. It doesn't take all night to play a game, but you can play as long as you want. Great stuff, faster than Scrabble, and in some ways more of a challenge.

- 11/05/01 Sounds great, I must try it. Just wondering, do you not get penalised for 'making up' non-existent new words? In which case I would never have dared try xyst! |

- 10/05/01 I'm glad you think 40's the optimum age... I'm supposed to have an A-level in English and be doing a degree, but I'm still rubbish at the game!
BTW, you've also become more knowledgable than my spell checker, it claims that xyst and zurf aren't really words... |
