Chad Valley Hungry Hippos
Advantages: Fast paced fun, encouarges counting, easy to play, doesn't take long
This is a game that I used to own when I was little and I always loved it so when my sister bought it for my daughter for Christmas last year I couldn't wait to play it with her.
The game is created by Hasbro and the box for it has changed a fair few times over the years but the one we have has a white background with the name of the game on and the Hasbro logo, all four hippos are pictured on the front of it as if they are jumping out towards you chasing the little white balls.
Inside the box you get an instruction manual although the game is pretty self-explanatory, you get the playing arena and you get a bag of little white balls about the size of marbles. The playing arena is made of red plastic, there is a circular area for playing and there are four hippos attached in pink, yellow, green and orange, to the side of each hippo there is a little well where the balls you eat will collect.
To play the game you need between 2 and 4 players and the game is suitable for ages 4 and up according to the box. You release the balls into the playing arena and then on the words go you each use the black lever on the back of your chosen hippo to make the hippos head leap up and forwards and then down and in, the hope being that some balls will become trapped into the hippos mouth and be pulled back into your well. The game continues until all of the balls have been collected and then you have to count up how many balls you have caught to find the winner.
Sophie loves this game when she wins and hates it when she loses, she tries to cheat by sitting sideways on to her hippo and blowing the balls which is my Dads fault as he suggested it when he had had a few! Sophie manages to play the game easily and the lever is easy to work, the game is made of plastic and is durable and the balls are pretty lightweight but heavy enough that they don't fly off.
I like this game as it is really fun to play but can get pretty competitive, if you are clever you can watch for balls bouncing off your opponents hippo and open your hippos mouth at just the right time. I like that the game takes no time at all to set up and hardly any time to play which means you only need a few minutes for a game so even if you are busy you can still do something with your child. Sophie does get rather over excited after we have played this game which I think is because it is so fast paced. This was a family favourite when I was little and still is now.
Summary: Great family fun
