Chess may well be the oldest game that people play regularly. It is a Played throughout the civilised world and there is evidence that it might have been played in Mesopotamia about 6,000 B.C.. The rules we use now were standardised and written down in the middle of the eighteenth century by a Syrian called Philip Stamma.

Nowadays all types and ages of people play Chess and it is played in many countries. It can be played for fun or in tournaments. Russians with names like Karpov and Kasparov will always be associated with excellence in the game. Most of us will never come up to the standard of such great players but that does not mean you can not have a game worth playing.

When I was a child chess always seemed like a really hard game for people who had nothing better to do. I had learnt the rules as but as the youngest in the family I never won and I lost interest in the game.

Now I am a parent with my own children I have a chessboard for them to play on. I know they would rather play on the computer, watch television or just be entertained. I am keen to encourage them to take part in other interests. I play chess with my children and do not win all the time but try to encourage them to improve their game.

Chess does have a complex set of rules each piece having its own way of moving. The aim of the game is to trap the King of your opponent. A chessboard is a black and white grid 8 squares by 8 squares. Each player has 16 pieces which start off laid out on their side of the board, each of the pieces move in their own particular way. The rules may be difficult but when they are learnt children can soon learn techniques and strategies to help them win. I am sure these will help them in years to come.

At my children's school there is a Chess club. This is an excellent opportunity for them to play their contemporaries, they are not all expert players but they can all learn. The aim of the club is to get
to the top of the chess ladder. It is a great excuse to stay in at break times for those who do not like exercise!

Children nowadays are so up to date with modern technology that sometimes I think they miss out on the old faithfuls. I think children could do a lot worse than learn to play this game. It has lasted such a long time it must be good.
