Advantages: Skillful. Involving. Fun with lots of players.

Disadvantages: Long at times.

So famous is this classic board game that there have been video games made from it, a TV game show and even a funny little film known as Clue. I'm sure many people own this game and it's probably one of those board games you've left gathering dust on your shelf. I doubt many people play it nowadays. To be honest I myself haven't played it in a long time either.

For those of you who don't know what this game is about and how to play it then you're probably one of the very few who don't own it! But I'll do the obligatory explaining. Cluedo is a game where you take on the role of a detective and have to solve the murder of Dr Black (apparently the owner of the house whose body has been found). This is done by means of elimination as you have to work out who did it, in which room they did it in and with what weapon (remember I'm talking about a murder!). You do this by moving your playing piece (one of the characters) around the playing board, which represents the house, and going into each of the different rooms. There are 6 characters to choose from, one of them being the murderer. I usually choose Rev. Green, simply because I feel he's innocent! There are also 6 weapons to play around with and I do suggest you be careful with them! I was very surprised with how sharp the dagger actually is and I tore a piece of clothing in an accident!

There are detective notes to help you shortlist down who the murderer is, but make sure to write on these in pencil, so you can reuse them. Someone I know used ink all the time and doesn't have any detective notes anymore.

Something that makes this different from many other board games is that you're not just a simple playing piece. Well okay, you are a stupid looking plastic piece, but you are also in fact a character who is a part of the game. You play a person who is solving a murder and in some cases unaware that even the character you chose when yo
u started the game might be the murderer.

It's great when you've got all 6 people playing, talking, solving, confirming and making notes. It's much more fun and it creates a great atmosphere, but it also makes the game last much longer. The playing board is also quite big when you think about it and the one dice makes moving around quite slow. When playing the game with just two people and it can be rather dull and in extreme cases very disturbing!

The game may be old but it's still clever and it's still a great classic that's worth dusting off the shelf! And if it's not on your shelf then I guess you don't own it. Or maybe you've just been playing with that lead pipe for too long!

Nice opinion shalimar - why no-one else has read it is a complete mystery. I'm not sure, but it may well have happened in the drawing room... :)
