Advantages: Fun, Enjoyable, Short and Sweet
Disadvantages: None
Well thought it was time to write yet another review, and with my recent enjoyment of board games, I thought it was time to draw your attention to Connect 4!
Connect 4 is a game that I first played as a young boy and have personally loved it for years since. Connect 4 is now published by Hasbro (as seem to be a lot of my favourite games, strange!) and is suitable for all ages from 7 and up.
Connect 4 is really a simple version of Tic-Tac-Toe in a vertical version with the added twist that you have to get 4 in a row.
Setting Up the Game:
Ok, if you have the version that I have (as per the version that I am reviewing) then when you first get the box you should have a nice Box with red and yellow discs (21 of each) in it along with a grid and two end pieces.
Setting up the game is therefore extremely easy, place the two end pieces to the grid and lock it ni place and you have the game set up.
Playing the Game:
Now playing the game is also extremely simple (as such perfectly suitable for all aged 7 and upwards and personally could probably be played by younger as well). The aim of the game is to get 4 discs in a row, either horizontal, vertical or diagonal. Each player takes a turn placing one piece in a row on the grid with the obvious longterm objective of getting 4 in a row.
Winning the Game:
I am sticking to my same structure as before and therefore this does need to be included here, although it is kinda obvious. The first person who gets 4 discs in a row, either horizontal, vertical or diagonal wins.
Strategies:
Now strategy is obvious important in this game. The obvious aim is to have 4 in a row, and therefore the best thing is to get in a position where you have two options to go to get said 4 in a row as then your opponent cannot be beat you.
Now that was so obvious, it hurt me to write it, but it kinda had to be said (or should I say written?). The only other real tip that I can give to you is to make certain that you think at least a couple of moves ahead. That way you should be able to plan your move and hopefully persuade your opponent to go where you want to so that you can win the game.
My Opinion:
I must admit I enjoy this game, probably because my wife can rarely beat me and I do enjoy winning! It is such a simple game to play that also does not take a long time.
As such it is perfect for those times when you just have a few minutes time and really want to fill it with something enjoyable. You can play it many times in a row and we usually play either best of 3 or best of 5 depending on how long we have.
All in all this is an excellent game that is fun to play with no real drawbacks that I can think of.
As a side note, I would also recommend travel connect 4 and as I recently saw this christmas, there is a Fridge version which is magnetic and allows you to play it on the fridge. Really enjoyable and I will be looking out for it for myself.
Summary: Good fun game.
