Hasbro Connect 4
Advantages: Simple, but great fun
When the kids were younger they would often badger me to play games with them. I always liked the simple traditional games, and Connect 4 was one of my favourites. The kids enjoyed this one too, so everyone was happy.
In the box you'll find a collection of red disks, yellow disks and a blue plastic frame which has 42 spaces (7 wide by 6 high) for the yellow and red disks to be slotted in to. The game is for 2 players only, with one person having the red disks and the other the yellow disks.
The object of the game, as most of you will already know, is to get 4 disks of the same colour in a row, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Each player takes it in turn to slot their disk in the top of the frame into their chosen location. Like I've already said, the winner is the first person to connect 4, or if no one manages it, it is a tie.
The tiles are released by sliding the base of the frame away, then they all come sliding out.
I played this game years ago, but recently I bought it for one of my nephews and it had barely changed. The plastic frame didn't break after some heavy handed use by my nephew and his friends.
What I've always liked about Connect 4 is that kids can exercise their brain while playing it and learn from their mistakes to get better.
It only cost a fiver from Tesco a few months ago and is now available from Amazon.co.uk for £7.98. So keep an eye out for the best deals.
It's suitable for ages 6 and above.
