Hasbro Connect 4
Advantages: Good easy strategy game
Disadvantages: Can be a bit repetitive
I always enjoyed playing Connect 4 when I was a child, so when I spotted the game in my local charity shop (all pieces included) for £1.50 I picked it for my little boy.
The game is basically a strategy game whereby to win you have to connect four pieces in a row, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The game consists of a blue plastic upright board with wholes in it, supported by two legs; it also comes with yellow and red round plastic counters. To play the game you need two players, each player chooses a colour and puts a counter into the slot at the top of the board, the next player does the same and the aim of the game to try and block your opponent from getting four in a row, whilst setting themselves up to get four in a row. The principle of the game is a bit like noughts and crosses. If neither player gets four in a row the game is declared a draw. To release the counter pieces from the board there is a small lever at the bottom that you pull up and all the counters fall out. When I was a child we would play the best of three, five, or 100, depending on how competitive we were feeling.
The game is aimed at ages 7 and upwards, though my two year plays with it putting in the counters, and my 4 and 5 year nieces play quite well, so under supervision I would say that it is easy enough for younger children to play. I think the game retails at around £5-6 pounds, but looking around the game may have been updated a little, as the front of the box I have differs from that on the Toys R Us website, though the principle of the game remain the same.
Overall I would recommend this game to others, as it easy to play and helps to encourage children to think strategically and logically. However, the game does tend to get a bit repetitive after a while so I'm not sure this is one of those games that will keep children occupied for hours on end.
Summary: Overall enjoyable game
