Advantages: good to play
Disadvantages: can be boring
Have you made a connection?
Connect 4 is made by Hasbro. Other manufacturers also make this game. It is a vertical game of tic tac toe.
This game is available from toys are us for £7.99. I am sure I have seen it cheaper elsewhere.
I am describing the standard game of connect 4 today although I have seen it available in different forms.
Connect 4 is a game suitable for 2 players of about 7-8 years old and over, it is not
Purely a game for children, teenagers and adults can find it fun too.
I am not sure when connect four was first sold I remember we bought one in the early 80’s.
The connect four is made up of a flat thick blue rectangular plastic board which is two pieces welded together leaving a central space between. The board has 42 round holes in it. The holes are a little larger than a 10p piece. These holes are arranged in 6 rows each row have 7 holes.
This blue plastic tray then is fitted onto two blue plastic support feet and stood up to play the game. This makes it easy for players to sit opposite each other.
There are 42 discs/counters provided 21 red 21 yellow. These discs are like fat large 10 p pieces and fit in the round holes in the vertical board.
The object of the game is to get 4 counters of the same colour in a row vertical, horizontal or diagonal before you opponent does.
You take it in turn to place a disc into the board this is a strategy game trying to block your opponent’s opportunities for making a row while trying to make your own row of four discs. Once you have placed a disc there is no going back no changing minds it has to stay there.
Watch what your opponent is doing otherwise you may miss their trick
It is possible to set your discs up to give you opportunities to make a row of four in alternate ways, so a little pre planning is good.
This game usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the experience and capabilities of the players.
There are several web sites where you can play connect four against the computer. I just played a game and I won . you canplay for free at http://www.downs.kent.sch.uk/childrenszone/games/g ameconnectfour1p.htm
This game can also be called 4 in a row.
I have seen mega size games of this available 1.15 metres high also miniature travel sets 15cm long.
I would not go out and buy the mega size as I think this game gets a bit tedious after a while. Ok for a game or even two, the travel set is good as it is small and whiles away the time. It is a good game for children to stretch their thinking strategy play. Have fun playing this game best wishes Mary
