Advantages: Cheap, good fun and entertaining
Disadvantages: Not for very little children!
I know the sport (and many peoople do not even consider it to be that) has an image of fat beer drinking, fag-toting blokes but to play the game is to love it. It's a game of skill, stamina and dexterity with a sharp mathematical brain required to make the doubles. Sure it looks easy and I started playing in a league last year and quickly found myself getting whacked by mere County standard players in 12 darts or less. It's also a brilliant spectator sport, how can anyone defy the God-like genius of Sid Waddell (the commentator on SKY) and the sheer presence of Bobby George, one of the true characters of the game. At the top at the moment is one Phil Taylor, Stoke publican and quite possibly the greatest darts player in history after beating the BDO champion Raymond Barneveld in the clash of the champions. Many people long for the two camps to be reunited again so we can see the likes of Ray Barneveld, Chris Mason, Martin Adams take on some of the names who sold out to SKY such as Taylor, Dennis Priestley, Rod "The Prince of Style" Harrington and The "Iceman" Warriner. Let's face it it's agame which doesn't take itself to serious but provides fun and entertainment for millions worldwide. It's also nice to see my childhood favourites Bob Anderson and John Lowe still going strong after all these years (OK so I grew up in a pub can you tell!!) Darts is cool to watch and play. Adios

- 29/07/00 I am so bad at darts it's a wonder I haven't injured anyone, but I remember throwing a few round at Chris Mason's house with my best mate when I was a teenager years ago. He kept the board above his fridge, and I lost a dart down the back of it. He was up in the loo at the time, so when we realised we couldn't retrieve it, we crept quietly out and it was never mentioned again... Sorry Chris, it was me! |
