Dominoes

I was playing dominoes with the kids the other day and was thinking about all the traditional games we still play. The domino I was playing was not a spotty one but a picture set. I do have a traditional set somewhere at home (it was my granddads) not played for ages so thought I would tell you all I know about dominoes.

First a history lesson
Dominoes is a game first recorded as being played in china in the 14th century eventually crossed countries and seas from France to Britain in the 18C.

The word Domino is French it means a black and white hood that is worn
By Christian priests in the winter. It is thought that this is where the name for the game comes from.

What are Dominoes?
In a classic domino set there are 28 rectangular tiles. Sometimes called bones each tile is divided into two by a line on either side of the line there are up to 6 spots sometimes called pips there are different number of spots on most halfs. If you started a line with a double blank and slowly built the numbers up by laying a blank/one one /one one/two up to a double six you would use all the dominoes. Traditionally a domino tile is black with white dots but other colours have now been introduced

How to play
Dominoes are a game for two people but more can play. To play the traditional dominoes you take turns to lay a tile.
Each player takes 6 dominoes Do not show your dominoes to anyone else stand them on end pointing towards you .When there is more than 3 players each takes 3 domino. The rest are left as sleeping dominoes.

The person to go first is the person with the highest double domino. He/she lays that domino and the person next to them lays a domino next to it that has matches one of the sides. So its double six then six and another number. If the next person can not match the domino dots he/she misses a turn and takes a domino from the sleeping dominoes.
The dominoes are laid all touching each other and make a chain line or snake across the table or floor.

Winning
The person who is the winner is the first person to use all their dominoes. .If the game gets stuck with no one being able to lay then the person who wins is the person who is left with the least dominoes.
A good strategy is to use the double dominoes numbers first they are not so easy to get rid of. The original hand of dominoes you get given is chance, but there is skill involved in how you play, which domino you lay next.

One of the images people have of the game dominoes being played is in the pub between two old men. Dominoes have been a pub game for many years. Pubs often have a set available and Domino championships played by regulars.

Dominoes are great for children .Starts them on early number recognition and practicing matching skills.
There are many domino sets for children, not all with number dots but with pictures to match. Domino games like this helps their concentration skills. Playing with another child helps their interpersonal skills as they have to share and learn how to lose and win gracefully.
A set of dominoes is small so easy to take anywhere to play.

If you have no set and want to play instructions for making your own at http://www.underfives.co.uk/dominoes.html.

There are several on line sites for playing dominoes. I just played a game at
Http: //www.ababasoft.com games/dominoes.html you can also play on line at http://www.dominoesonline.com/ or http://www.karibino.com and there are many more sites. Not quite the same as playing at the pub, but guess you could always have your favourite pint to hand anyway.

If you wanted to you can buy large garden dominoes some available at http://www.rawgarden.co.uk or http://www.sunshinebits.com/cnb/shop/sunshinebits? productID=567 cost about 20 quid
There are some Domino sets that are tactile for easy use by the blind. I work with a blind child and have made my own tactile set as she needs one that is simpler than the ones I have seen available. For tactile sets go to http://onlineshop.rnib.org.uk
They also have easy to see sets for those old guys who are losing their sight.

There are other games that you could play with dominoes I will finish this review by standing my dominoes up on end fairly close to each other being careful not to knock one there I now have a long line of dominoes across my computer desk shall I knock on over ? yes one gone I now have the domino effect they have all fallen down each one knocking the next one over , BYE

Summary: A game that startyed in China in the 14 C
