Fruit machines are such a tease. They lure you with their bright lights and music...jackpot £30 says the flashing banner. Ooh, how can I resist? Yes,it could be me, more likely than the lottery I tell myself, as I put a second pound coin in. I rummage in my bag and eventually extract a few twenty pences from the bottom. Oh no, I've got 20p left in the machine but its 25p a go, so I rummage for a 5p and can't find one. I put 10p in and then have to find another 20p to use my credits up....

So it goes on, I have to perform progressively harder mathematical tasks, drink my brandy and coke, eat my crisps and play the machine. 'Do you smoke,' asks someone. 'No, but I might if I could find a hand to do it with.'

I lose £10 and a whole lot of other loose change I decide to ignore, and go back to the table. Someone has pinched my seat!

And will I do it again? Probably, the next time that tease of a machine winks its lights at me!
