Advantages: Good fun
Disadvantages: Can become very addictive
There is only one winner when it comes to the fruit machines and that is the person with the key to it. I know it but still cannot resist a flutter once in a while. It’s the flashing lights and the music that lures me. I rummage through my purse for a few pound coins, and the pleasure I get if I win a couple of quid straight off is something else but of course that does not happen very often. I never walk away when I have made a small profit. I keep pushing another pound coin in the slot just in case those bells hold or I get another number to go onto the feature run. Why do I waste my money? I never walk away with a pile of cash, any win is always put straight back in. It is simple; I find a few bob on a fruit machine very relaxing. I can forget about work and family problems for a short while and just concentrate on the reels and all the hidden features. So what if I don’t come away with a win, I can have half an hour’s pleasure for a few quid once in a while. How many pints of beer can you buy for that? Not many, and a packet of cigarettes cost just about the same. I think I prefer a fruit machine as a vice to the drinking and smoking habits. I must say one thing though before I end. Fruit machines can be addictive, so much so that I have seen people ploughing pounds into them. The next press of the button might just be the one to drop the jackpot. A pretty desperate situation to get into and this is when fruit machines can cause problems. I would never play if I could not afford to loose the money, it is after all a gamble but used for pleasure once in a while can be great fun.

- 10/06/02 Being brought up in a pub, I have seen many people become obsessed with fruit machines - and unfortunately, I was no exception. It still amazes me how a person (like myself) can view a situation in a logical manner, yet still fall so heavily. I just stay away from them now after my short addiction - lucky for me, I had a very supportive mother! |

- 10/08/01 Have you ever visited fruit machines in a casino? We recently spent about 2 hours watching people feed the machines. Some people were putting money in 2 or 3 machines at a time. The floor was littered with paper where the people had changed their cash for tokens (which were wrapped in paper). Personally I have never put money in fruit machines, I prefer to waste mine in having a flutter at the races. |

- 09/08/01 I agree these machines can become very addictive. I ran a pub for years and saw the same people, week after week, loose thier wages on these machines.
I have never felt the need thank god to put my hard earned cash into one. |
