      A great family game

We play a lot of games in my house, everyone from the three year old up is a big fan, so when I played this at a friend's house I knew it was the perfect game for us.

The game itself is very attractive, with translucent coloured pieces that give a satisfying click when placed. The board is slightly ridged in a grid of squares, meaning that the pieces don't slide around. Someone put a lot of thought into designing the appearance of the game, and it paid off.

Blokus is a strategy game for two to four players. It consists of tiles of different shapes and sizes, in four different colours. Each player in turn plays one piece, diagonally from one of their other pieces. It cannot share any edges with another piece of the same colour, and the idea is to place as many of your pieces as possible. By spreading out into the opposing players' corners, you can reduce the space available to them, and they are doing the same to you.

If you place all pieces there's a bonus, but otherwise, it's the player with the fewest numbers of 'squares' left who wins. Each playing tile is made of squares, from one to five. If you have two five pieces left at the end, then you beat someone who has their one, two, one three and three four pieces left, as you have fewer 'points'.

The game is recommended for players aged 5 and up. Game play is not intuitive for adults, as you have to place pieces diagonally from each other, not next to each other. However, my 6 year old niece and my daughter, who was about 33 months when she first played it, both grasped this instantly. The effect of this is that it's a great game to play with a wide range of ages, as it's actually easier in some ways for younger children.

All four of us love the game, and it's a great game for playing together. It is easier to play with four, but there are rules for two or three players as well. That's too hard for my (now) 3 year old, but she is much younger than the target audience!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A game for the whole family that's definitely worth investing in!

Blokus is a strategy game which works best with 4 players, though you can play it with two or three. You take it in turns to place pieces on the board, each person starting from their own corner and with their own colour. Every new piece has to touch a piece of the same colour, but can only touch pieces of the same colour at the corners. The game goes on until no one can put any more pieces down and the person with the least squares left to put down wins!

I always like a game that's highly tactical with only a little based on luck. You have to try to block other players and try to make sure there's space for you to play all your pieces. The game requires a lot of concentration to win it. Having said that, it's incredibly simple to play and you won't need to spend ages looking through the instructions before you get it.

According to the box Blokus is suitable for ages 8 and up and I'd agree with that having played it with an 8 year old, though they may not be as good at the strategy as an adult they will still love it. It's excellent for children and adults alike. It's not a game I can imagine getting bored of playing either - definitely not one of those ones that sits in the cupboard gathering dust for years on end!

You can currently buy Blokus for £14.29 on Amazon and I would definitely recommend it for that price. The board and pieces are made of plastic and seem incredibly sturdy so it's going to last a long time. There are compartments in the box to separate the different coloured pieces.

The game can take from about 15 minutes to play depending on how fast your players are at making decisions, so it's pretty quick, though as soon as you've finished a game you'll want to play another!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Definitely an educational game, but a lot of fun too.

This game is actually extremely aesthetically pleasing! The jewel coloured pieces and simple lines make it really attractive. It's well made too. Not the main reason you'd buy a game I admit, but still, it adds to the pleasure!

It's basically a simple to learn game of strategy which the whole family can play. If you enjoy games like Tetris or generally have good spatial awareness, you're likely to be good at this - it's all about seeing how shapes fit together and anticipating.

The rules are pretty straightforward - each player gets an equal number of shapes made out of one to five squares, you take it in turns to place a piece on the board (each player starting from their own corner) and you have to place your piece so it touches another of your pieces at a corner only. The aim is to get as many pieces on the board as possible - so if you can place your pieces in such a way as to create a barrier, blocking your opponents, you have more space to play with. Easier said than done though!

One advantage this has as a family game is that the end result tends to be quite close, so nobody gets thrashed! It doesn't take too long either, so younger family members can keep their focus - it should be all done in half an hour, even if you have players who need a lot of thinking time! It's aimed at age 7+ but it's fun for all ages in the same way as the real classics like draughts.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Simple, fun game for everyone

Blokus is an abstract strategy game for between 2 and 4 players. It comes in many forms - Travel, PC Versions, etc, but this is the original format, and my favourite.

The board is made of white / grey plastic, and the pieces are very colourfull in red, yellow, blue and green. All very good quality.

The rules are simplicity itself. Place any of your pieces on the board. There are only 2 conditions - first, it needs to fit on the board without overlapping any other piece, and it needs to be joined to one of your own pieces on the diagonal. You also need to be aware of the other players placement options, and tru to block them (the blockus of the title!). The winner? The person who manages to get rid of most of their pieces.

Sounds simple, and it is, but once the board starts getting crowded, your options become more and more limited.

This game has won many boardgaming awards and deservidly so. It can be played and finished in 30 minutes, taught to nearly everyone, and great fun.

Young children will enjoy just placing the tiles in different patterns, which will help them with spatial awareness and dexterity.

A game that will be known as a classic in years to come.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        very original, a must buy!

Blokus is a very original exciting board game that everyone can play. I was hooked within minutes!

The whole aim of the game is to put down as many pieces as possible (yes I know sounds easy! That's what I thought!) The pieces that are of a range of shapes and sizes must be put down diagonally to any of you other pieces that you have put down, this means a huge amount of strategy is needed to smart and outwit any of your other opponents.

What I like about the game.....
The game is not to long- I play games such as monopoly that can go on for hours but Blokus will go on for 30 mins (if that).

There is nothing like it- I love strategy games that you have to really think to win (this is one of those).

It is simple- anyone can play it. The strategy may mean you need to use your brain but the actual games rules are so simple it is unbelievable!

        Problems.......
4 players are needed- Although it says on the box you can play with 2 or 3 players it's not the same and does not really work out. for full enjoyment 4 players are needed for a game to really exciting! It can be hard to find 4 people to play all the time. Also it means that if you are in a group of 5 or more people cant play, this happens often in our family!

Despite this problem Blokus is a great game which I totally advise you to buy it will bring you endless fun, there could be a different result after every game!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A fun game for any age - I would highly recommend it.

Blokus, by The Green Board Game Company, is fantastic strategy game for all the family - the only trouble is, that it's addictive! This colourful strategy game has twice been voted game of the year and is brilliant fun for one to four players

          The game

The rules can be mastered in a flash, it is most definitely easy to learn. Once you've played it a couple of times you'll be hooked.

The aim of the game is to cover as much of the board as you can with your coloured pieces. You have to connect as many of your pieces as possible, but they are only allowed to touch at the corners. It is a tactical game - you need to expand your own territory whilst blockading your opponents.

There are 84 game pieces, in four colours - red, blue, green and yellow. Every piece is a different shape. You place your pieces on a raised plastic gameboard that is marked with 400 sqaures. Every move you make counts and no two games are the same. (Except that I never win!!)

When all the payers are blocked and no-one can place any more pieces on the board, the game ends. The winner is the player who has the most number of squares covered on the board (or the least number of squares left).

One of the best things about this game is that on average it takes just 20-30 minutes to play. So when the kids ask if you can play a game you can say "yes!" You don't have to have that awful sinking feeling that you're going to have to spend hours round a game board when there are things to be done!

We bought this as our 'Christmas game'. Myself and my three children became addicted very quickly. I must admit I sometimes try to get out of playing games (mainly because they take too long) but in January last year something strange happened! We would clear up from tea and I would suggest playing a game of Blokus. The first time I did this the children nearly died of shock! Each night for several weeks I would make them play it with me. I have now calmed down a little - probably because I can't beat my eldest son (but I will one day!) - however we still play regularly. We had friends to stay last weekend and they enjoyed it so much that they ordered the game online whilst they were here.

          Cost
The best place to get this game seems to be online. I payed about £18.00 a year ago, but Amazon have it for £16.99 with Free P&P

You can also get Blokus Duo ( for two players) which we have, and I saw Blokus 3-D in a shop the other day which I think might be this years 'Christmas game'!

          Website
If you vist www.blokus.com you can play the game against the computer, get hints and tips on how to play the game, as well as gaining an international ranking.

Recommended for ages 7 and up.

As featured in Hamleys Brain Gym. Brilliantly compulsive strategy game that has loads to recommend it. Like originality and international awards for starters. Best of all the rules are very simple and games last for 20-30 minutes. Once you play Blokus you will want to play it again, and again......
