Advantages: fun for all the family
Disadvantages: can become boring after too many games
My daughter has had this game stuck in the back of the cupboard for quite a while and during the recent snow storms she decided that we MUST have a game as she was board silly.
* WHAT IS IT..?
Guess who, from MB, is a simple to play board game for two people, aged 6 years and up...
It is an easy format of a each player taking turns to ask a simple question to try and discover who their opponent is holding...by process of elimination.
The downside is that when you open the box you soon realise that you have to put the entire game together, although not difficult it is a little fiddly at times...
* CONTENTS...
* Two sheets showing images of peoples faces, one red sheet and one blue sheet... each sheet consisting of 24 rather funny looking face printed on it, with names such as Bernard, Bill and Sally.
* A sheet of 24 white/yellow picture cards, consisting of the same 24 images as the blue and red sheets
* 48 white plastic frames for the pictures to slot into.
* One red and one blue plastic playing boards for the white frames to slot into... with a small white counting piece in the bottom left.
* Instructions on setting up and playing.
** SETTING UP...
Well this is the fiddly bit as you have to take the sheets of blue/red images and place every piece into the white plastic frames, (one picture in each frame), and the click the frames into the red/blue tray.... So in the end you have a red tray filled with red backed faces and the blue tray filled with blue backed faces...
* Do not place the faces in the same places on each board as this will make the game to easy, mix the faces around so the boards do not look the same.
Once done the game can begin.
** PLAYING THE GAME...
Once you have assembled the fiddly boards each player picks a colour and flicks the pieces so they are stood up, facing away from their opponent...
Then each player chooses a card from the white/yellow backed pack without letting the opponent see it, placing it into the slot at the bottom of there chosen tray.
That's it... the game is ready to play...
** HOW TO PLAY...
The player to go first must ask a question about their opponents pictured face... ie, Is yours wearing glasses? Or, Has yours got red hair/big nose/a beard/long hair?.. Etc etc..
The person being asked must only answer with a YES or a NO... nothing else....
If the answer to say Is yours wearing glasses? is Yes then all those faces WITHOUT glasses must be flicked down, leaving all those faces with glasses still showing... or if the person ISN'T wearing a hat then those without hats should be flicked down... and so on....
Each player takes it in turns to ask a question until there is only one face card left standing on any board... thus indicating who there opponent is holding...
The person who guesses who their opponent is holding is the winner of that game.... But if you guess wrong then you lose that game...
The entire game is really the best of five, first to three is the outright winner
* IN CONCLUSION...
As I said earlier, my daughter wanted to have a game of this and insisted that I be her opponent. So, reluctantly, (as she does tend to cheat at most games anyway), I opened the box and suddenly realised why it had sat at the back of the cupboard all that time... the little thin cardboard pieces with images of strange faces on them were scattered around the bottom of the box, most of them having slipped out of their little plastic frames, yet again...
After taking what seemed like an eternity to slot the pieces back into their places, frustratingly carefully, as if we had just bought the game from new, we began the game... and the fun began...
The questions came thick and fast, the little plastic pieces flicked down faster than a house of cards in a hurricane and my daughter seemed ready to begin cheating yet again... (I have to keep a close eye on her every time we play any game... )
Once you get into the spirit of the game it does become enjoyable, (especially after you've forgotten about the annoying time it took you to set the damned thing up).
Each game can take a few minutes to play, depending on which questions are asked... especially when someone asks "is yours a man/woman?"... as this will knock down maybe half your board... (although this question is not allowed to be asked in the first few questions as it would end the game within seconds.
Although it can become a little monotonous if too many games are played in one sitting the fun is still there, depending I suppose on who your playing against... but to play the best of five is a good all round figure... allowing you to not become bored with the entire process of asking questions and flicking down images of funny looking people... (and in my case watching for my daughter to start cheating).
In all, a nice harmless, uncomplicated and friendly game for two people to play, and can lead to some rather good laughs...although younger kids may need a little assistance with asking the right questions... but once they get the hang of it they'll be away.
Personally, I preferred the earlier version from my youth, which seemed more sturdy, although they weren't exactly child friendly with there scoring pegs and nasty little sharp corners, but this new look version is so flimsy and seems to fall about if someone opens the door creating a draft...
If you want to get hold of the new look version then have a look around, although www.amazon.co.uk. Do it for about £12.00... And Toysrus sell it for slightly more.
Summary: 24 funny faces in one box
