Advantages: Wonderful learning resource for children

Disadvantages: Games aren't long enough, boring after so long

I have fond memories of 'Guess Who?' as a child. Naturally since then this classic childhood game has been re-released and the faces have been modernised and such but the rules remain the same.

Naturally it is a game for children, aimed specifically at that market and as an adult you probably won't get a lot of enjoyment from it but it is a great learning tool and source of entertainment for a younger audience.

The game is bright and colourful and is very simple to play. There are two boards, both identical and one given to each player. Each board contains animated images of 24 people with a variety of different facial features or attributes. They are identified only by their first name which can be found underneath their face. The faces are attached to a sort of pivoting device that can be flipped face down during the elimination process of the game, which comes later.

Each player chooses a card from the pile. These cards all contain the same faces as those on the board.

The faces themselves do try to be as realistic as possible but can be quite funny making the process entertaining for children.

The object of the game is to guess which card your player is holding and identify the name of the person. It's a very straight forward task and consists of the players taking it in turns to ask questions that will generate a yes or no answer in order to eliminate the people on their board. Questions like 'Does your person have brown hair?' for instance. If the answer is yes, you can knock down all the people on the board without brown hair or if the answer is no, you knock down the individuals with brown hair. If the game is played correctly then eventually one player should be left with only one person standing and that should be the individual on the other player's card. However, guesses can be made at earlier points in the game if the player feels confident enough.

The games don't last for very long and are very simple for adults to play. For children however, 'Guess Who?' is a great learning experience as it allows them to not only interact and enjoy playing games but they can also explore the different facial features between people and identify different coloured eyes or hair. Only 2 players can play a time which is frustrating and again I mention the length of each game as it doesn't really seem worth the price for what the game itself actually is. I'd go as far as to dub 'Guess Who?' as a learning resource only, as thinking of it now makes me want to cringe whilst I enjoyed it a lot more when I actually had the game at about 7 years old.

I wouldn't really expect anybody above the age of 9 or 10 to play this game and actually enjoy it as the scenarios are so repetitive and dull that it's only entertaining for a certain amount of time.

Summary: A rather average yet memorable childhood game

I never had this as a kid, so I used to love playing with it at other people's houses! x

Down with 'modernised faces' I say! :(

No, it's a great game to play with suitably tasteless adults. 'Does your character look totally Botoxed?' 'Does your character look like he could be on the sex offender's register?'
