Advantages: Timeless and addictive.
Tis the season for many things, including rolling out the board games on Christmas Day when everybody's too stuffed to move. As long as your brain still works, Taboo's a great choice for such post-gluttony merriment. It's one of those games that's so simple in premise, pleasantly easy to pick up and play (no wading through rulebooks or fiddling with setting up), and enormous, addictive fun. It's also great in that it doesn't go out of date; unlike quiz games where you end up playing through the same cards after a while, this will keep you going for decades.
The premise of the game is indeed basic: you're given a word to define to your team-mates and a list of words you can't use in your definition. One of the opposing team members watches eagle-eyed and squeezes the squeaker if you trip up and mention one of the taboo words, in which case you discard the card. You have a minute to rack up as many cards as you can.
It's a compelling game, and a deceptively tricky one - it's all too easy to drop in one of the taboo words, as they're so darn useful in defining the word in question. Be prepared for more arguments than you'd think such a game could possibly cause as well - over-zealous squeakers are everywhere!
All in all, this is a real classic - it's just the right level of challenge, and you're constantly driven on by the feeling that you'll be able to beat your record the next time round. If you haven't got it, it's a great buy, and if you have, it's well worth dusting it off for Christmas.
Summary: A classic game.
