Advantages: Helps co-ordination, turn taking, fun family times
My daughter started to want to play games when she reached the age of two. Luckily, one of my friends bought her this game for her second birthday. I was a bit unsure as the age range is supposed to be for over 3, but am very happy that she was given this now!
---About the range:
"Orchard Toys is a leading manufacturer of educational puzzles and games for children aged between 18 months and 12 years, with a reputation for excellence of design, manufacture and service" (from their website). They seem to make a lot of different games and puzzles for all different ages and they seem to get a lot of good reviews. This is the first one I have played.
---Playing the game:
The game comes in a cardboard box as shown in the picture with pictures of children doing the actions nfor head, shoulders, knees and toes. Once you open the box, it contains instructions, a spinner, 8 halves of the boards (you need to put two together like a jigsaw to play it), and lots of small boards with a coloured dot on one side and a on the other side there is a picture that represents one of the actions from the song or the whole song.
To play the game you need to put two halves of the board together like a jigsaw and then turn all the small pieces so that the coloured spots are facing up. The board has 8 pictures on it showing the actions from head, shoulders, knees and toes. The basic idea is to be the first to fill up your board to match the pictures on the board to the ones on the tiles. There are several ways suggested to play the game. The main one is to spin the spinner and choose a tile with the colour spot it lands on. You then turn it over and if it is missing from your board you add it on. If you get the tile with the picture of the full song, you can use it as any of the missing pieces. If you get one you already have, it is the end of your go. The first one to fill up their board wins.
My daughter was really excited when we got this game and we had to get it out of the box straight away. She soon worked out that the pictures were all from the song and she was able to match the actions with the correct picture. She found the pieces for the board and we decided to have a go at playing it. As she couldn't work out the spinner (she's only 2), we decided to just choose a piece and take turns. She also struggled with what to do with the piece with the song depicted on it, so we just sang the song when we got it which meant she kept trying to find that one!
This game has been a really good addition to our family play times as it is helping my daughter to learn how to take turns when playing games and allows us all to play together. The game has helped with her co-ordination as she has to put the pieces togethjer to make the board and has helped with her recognition as she has to match the tiles to the board. We have a lot of fun with this game and she often asks to play it and gets very excited when we all sit down together. It is also really good that it is based on a well known rhyme as my daughter recognised all the sections easily and was able to sing the song and do the actions with it.
I am really pleased that my friend bought this game for my daughter. It has brought us a lot of enjoyment and helped her learn some new skills - especially the turn taking! The game is supposed to be for 3-6 years but I think it can easily be adapted for younger children from the age of 2 to start to teach them about playing games. I would definitely recommend this game and am hoping to buy some more from this range to try out.
Summary: Recommended for family fun
