Advantages: A fun game for Friends fans
Disadvantages: Video clips can be repeated quite quickly
On the basis that you would probably only buy this game for yourself or a friend/family member who is a fan of the TV show 'Friends', this review is assuming that you have a reasonably good knowledge of the show, its characters and plotlines. If you don't like the show, this game isn't for you!
An extension of the original 'Scene It' game, which introduced a neat DVD component to the traditional board game, this Friends edition focuses not on the film genre of the original, but on the TV series.
The object of the game is to be the first player to move around the board, reaching the 'Final Cut' challenge zone, and answering questions correctly to become the victor.
Players move around the board by rolling 2 dice - a standard 6 sided numeric die, and a customised die which comprises the type of activity that the player will carry out on their go, as follows:
My Play: watch a video clip on the DVD, answer question individually
All Play: watch a video clip on the DVD, answer question against the other players, the first player to answer correctly wins
Buzz Card: pick up a card, carry out the action accordingly (typically things like move forward x spaces, miss a go etc)
Question cards: player answers a question from one of 3 categories
The DVD clips are entertaining, but can be repeated if you're not careful (there is an option to ensure that clips do not appear at random, but in sequence, which can prolong the replay factor), and it is here that most fun is likely to be had.
In terms of ease, there is a dramatic range of questions from the easy to the devilishly difficult. I thought I knew the series quite well, but was well and truly outplayed by some friends of mine who have clearly seen every episode many more times than I have!
This Friends edition of Scene It is normally available at a budget price in many retailers, and is worth the money if you are a fan of the show. As stated, it can get repetitive after a while, but leave a decent amount of time between games and it will feel quite fresh and fun every time you play.
Summary: A great board game for fans of the Friends game...who also own a DVD player!
