Advantages: Different buildings, great accompanying DVD! More fun!
Disadvantages: Enough pieces for 6 players, but not enough characters (5) on the DVD.
Oh my. I must have recommended this board game to SO many people over the past year. I've always 'liked' Monopoly, but like most people, I expect, can get a little fed up after 2 hours of playing! I have also through the years collected different versions of Monopoly, but the game play has never differed all that much. You don't really expect it to.
However, upon playing Tropical Tycoon Monopoly for the first time, I was astounded by the differences. Finally, a different version of the well loved game that truly IS different! This version is based on a Tropical Island that has been developed into a self contained community including hotels, golf courses, housing, etc.
Although there are 6 playing pieces, it's recommended that no more then 5 play, as at the beginning of the game, while watching the DVD that accompanies the board, you get allocated a character (of which there are only 5 of which is a shame!!). Throughout the game, keep an eye on the DVD. News reports will be played (depending on the roll of the dice) which may or may not effect your character directly - even if it isn't your turn! The news reports are well made, entertaining, and just a little bit silly (always a good thing!).
Also, as you travel around the board and purchase properties, you get much more of a choice when building. You can go with the traditional houses and hotels if you like, but you also get the opportunity to buy more unique buildings (restaurants, docks, parks and casinos!). When people land on your property containing one of the latter buildings, the amount they pay depends on a number of factors (for example, casino - depends on the roll of a dice, restaurants - depends on the neighbouring developments). Parks and docks, however, will depend on the DVD - keep a close eye on it!! If the cruise ship is in dock, and the sun is shining, you'll earn more (or have to pay out more if you're the unlucky lander!)!
Overall, a fantastic, and finally UNIQUE, variation of a classic. More of these please Hasbro!
Summary: Suitable for all the family - highly recommended!
