Advantages: Really fun
Disadvantages: Can go on for a while..
Monopoly is a fabulous board game, which is always great to play on a rainy day. It is a classic board game with many newer variations but I will be reviewing the classic standard version. You can buy it for just over £10s as toy shops and online.
The board mostly consists of squares on which properties lie. You can purchase them for money that you start the game with. Money comes with the game (not real unfortunately - just monopoly money) along with enough pieces for many players, houses, hotels, cards and the property cards.
There are many rules which are twisted when playing the game and you can make up your own rules for optimum fun! The basic idea of the game is to go around buying properties and preferably owning sets of properties, which are all of the same colour next to each other on the board. When you own a set, you can pay to build houses on them and even hotels. When people land on your properties, they have to pay rent, which increases when you have houses/hotels on your sets, which can leave the other players with a hole in their pocket!
Other squares in the game include community chest and chance squares. You take respective cards, which have a variety of things on them such as 'Go to jail' where you must go to the jail square and obey the rules of jail before being allowed out. Some cards may advance you to certain squares, some will charge you for something, others will give you money and the dreaded ones that charge tax on all your houses/hotels are terrible when you have many! The idea of the game is to make your opponents bankrupt in order to win the game.
It's a really great game to play with any from 2-6 people. I would highly recommend you buy it if you haven't already! The game is tactical but also very fun - Always used to lose myself but you get better :)
Thanks for reading
Summary: A great game for the family

- 24/01/09 This would have been much more useful for me if you had talked more about the rules that you change when you play, or ways that you play this differently. |
