Advantages: great fun game, buy property, take over London!
Disadvantages: not sure about length, based alot on chance
Monopoly is the most popular board game in the history of board games. Developed by Charles Darrow in 1935, it has now been played by approximately 750 million people worldwide making it the most played board game in history. The name of the game (Monopoly) comes from the Economic definition which is when a market is dominated by one company or individual.
Monopoly is a property based game and you try to acquire places on the board with more expensive streets getting you more money when other people land on them. The version I have played is the UK one with streets and stations from London on the board with more expensive locations (e.g Oxford Street, Mayfair, Park Lane) and less expensive ones (e.g Old Kent Road, Whitechapel) as you move around the board clockwise. The board has forty spaces with 28 locations, three Chance spaces, three Community Chest spaces, a Luxury Tax space, an Income Tax space, and the four corner squares: GO, Jail(, Free Parking, and Go to Jail. You start with a certain amount of monopoly money which is specified in the rules. This is used to purchase the streets/properties. Every time you pass go you also get £200. Once you purchase a street you can add houses and then hotels which means that if some one lands on that space they will have to pay more depending on the number of hotels and houses you have.
You have a piece to move around the board. The ones I remember are ship, boot , car and iron. You roll the dice to take a turn and move the alloted spaces. If you go to a community chest or chance space you will have to take the action specified on the card e.g paying a fine or moving to a specific place on the board. The aim of the game is to have the highest value of assets (net worth) at the end of the game or make everyone else bankrupt! This means the game can go on for as long as you wish . The aim of the game is to become a monoply and control most of the properties.
It is a fantastic game which I used to play mostly when I was younger. I think its great using this monopoly money to purchase assets (property) using pretend salaries etc. It is very fun and gets everyone involved. It is based alot on chance and the roll of the dice but even still is a great game and its not suprising that it is the most popular board game around. Living in London you also can see all the familiar street names which you have passed-it's just a great game. The length of the game is not really specified and it's up to the individuals to decide but it can go on almost forever sometimes!
Summary: most popular board game around

It's my first review on a board game/toy etc thought it was not 2 bad considering its not my best subject! |
