I can remember playing monopoly when I was 7 and I was at my Nan’s house, we used to play it every time we visited her. Sadly, she passed away, and for 4 years I went without the game I had grown to love. Then, last Christmas whilst visiting my boyfriends dad, we played Monopoly! I naturally had to be the dog, although it didn’t bring me much luck, as I still lost.

So what is it that draws people to monopoly?? Is it the pieces, the chance and community chest cards, never knowing whether you are going to be sent to jail, or is it the fact that you feel you will never handle as much money ever again, even though it is all fake?

The point of playing Monopoly is to become the richest player. You can do this through buying, renting and selling property. To play, you have to set up the board, cards and money, and each player chooses a piece. These range from a dog, to an iron, to a car. The money left over from being given out goes to the bank. One person is selected as banker (choose wisely as they may tend to cheat!!). If it helps, get the banker to be a separate person, not playing the game. The bank holds not only the money, but the Title Deed cards, houses and hotels the other players have bought them. Every time you pass go, or earn money from the cards, it comes from the bank, and when you have to pay taxes, fines, loans or interest, it goes to the bank.

To decide who plays first, each player roles the dice in turn (starting with the banker). The player with the highest number starts. Re-roll, and move the correct number of spaces forward. When you have landed on a space, you may be able to buy properties, pay rent, pay tax etc. If you throw a double, you may take another go, but throw 3 doubles in a row and you have to go to jail! Play passes to the left. Every time you pass go, you get $200 from the bank. If you land on a “chance" or "community chest" space you take the top card from the pile. Follow t
he instructions and then replace at the bottom of the pack. If you land on the “income tax" space you have to pay what it says on the board.

There are several ways to get into jail:
· your token lands on the space marked "Go to Jail"
· you get a card marked "Go to Jail"
· you throw doubles three times

You do not get to collect any money if you have to go to jail and your turn ends, you cannot have another go. To get out you may have to:
· throwing doubles on any of your next three turns
· using the "Get Out of Jail Free" card
· purchasing the "Get Out of Jail Free" card from another player and playing it
· paying a fine of $50 before you roll the dice
If you do not throw doubles by your third turn, you must pay the $50 fine.
Even though you are in Jail, you may buy and sell property, buy and sell houses and hotels and collect rents.

Whenever you land on an un-owned property you may buy that property from the Bank. If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker can sell it at auction to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. When you land on property owned by another player, the owner collects rent from you. It is a help to hold all the Title Deed cards in a colour-group because then you can charge double rent for unimproved properties in that colour-group. It is even more useful to have houses or hotels on properties because rents are much higher than for unimproved properties. When you own all the properties in a colour-group you may buy houses from the Bank and erect them on those properties. When you have four houses on each property of a complete colour-group, you may buy a hotel from the Bank

The game ends when all but one player becomes bankrupt.
