Advantages: Fun if you're winning

Disadvantages: Too many rules, Can be too long

Monopoly is a vicious board game which involves building a strong financial position for yourself at the detriment of others. It can be played with up to 6 players at the start but the number may steadily reduce as they become bankrupt and cannot continue.

The board has 40 squares which has on it a series of properties, railway stations and utilities which can be bought. Once bought any other player landing on them must pay you rent. The amount of the rent will increase significantly if you own all the properties of that group and even more if you develop the residential ones. There are also a number of squares where you have to take the top card of a pack and this too can mean a small change in your financial position. If you have a lot of developed property it can mean a huge change.

Moving about the board by the use of dice and in some cases by instructions from the cards you can soon use up your initial allowance of £1500 cash. Once this has gone the game can get interesting and like life it can sometimes be just a matter of cash flow.

The thing about Monopoly is that there are elements of skill as well as elements of luck but often you do find that once you are in a certain position in the game either doing particularly well or particularly badly then the flow of the game continues that way. The one doing well seems to get all the good luck and the one doing badly, well, you get the picture.

It is a game though where the one who is winning gets all the fun, those losing perhaps just wishing they would be made bankrupt soon so they can do something else. It is not the world’s most friendly game and if you value your friendships don’t play it with your best mates. Its winner takes all!
