Advantages: Superb fun; dodgy deals, bankrupt your friends!

Disadvantages: No-one will play with me :(

I LOVE MONOPOLY!

I have always loved monopoly, ever since I used to get thrashed at it by my brother, who would convince me that my Mayfair for his Angel, Islington was a good deal!

This is a pretty simple game. You travel round the board, and can buy property as you go. If someone lands on your property, they owe you rent. If you collect a property set (either 2 or usually 3 adjacent properties), you can build on them, pushing up the rents.

The joy of this game comes in 3 ways. Firstly, there are the chance and community cards, which as well as the dice add a little random fun into the mix.
Secondly there is the balance between going out and buying everything, developing as much as you can, whilst ensuring you have enough assets to cover paying rents, taxes etc.
And thirdly and most enjoyably, come the deals. You can buy, sell and trade property with other players, and are free to set whatever prices you like. When playing with more than 2 players, you get the added spice of alliances, double-dealing and downright lying.

Monopoly is a brilliant game, and it is testimony to that fact that it has been around so long. There is a Junior version, basically just a cut down version but with a funfair theme, and "Special Editions" such as "World Cup 98 Monopoly", "Star Wars Monopoly", "Newcastle and Gateshead Monopoly" (my fave!), and on Monday I saw in my local WHSmiths that they'd brought out a Pokemon edition! I may have to buy that!

Monopoly is fun for all the family, and I would say is best played wth 4 people. Then the fun really starts!

Otherwise, just dust it down, turn off the TV, crack open a bottle of wine and have a great evening in!
