Advantages: Hors of fun, family game.
Disadvantages: Can go on for a long time!
Whoa! If you play this old classic game against someone like my boyfriend you know they take its name to heart!! I was slaughtered! “Monopoly”, an old family favourite for up to 6 players from Waddingtons in the old trademark simple red and white box – my set is ancient but it doesn’t seem to have changed much over the years. It used to cost about a fiver but I’m guessing it’s probably around the £20 mark these days but well worth it. It seems people either love or hate it and I don’t play it often as it seems most people I know hate it! Admittedly the game can go on for hours and can be very frustrating and disheartening if you find you’re playing against a would-be property magnate like I was! The set comprises play money totalling £1000s, a handful of plastic houses and hotels, property information cards, chance cards, community chest cards plus playing pieces and dice as well as the necessary board which displays well known London streets for sale at ridiculous prices! Among the metal playing pieces you can opt to be an old boot (my favourite – maybe that’s where I’m going wrong!), a dog, car, boat, iron or top hat. The object of the game is then to continue round the board strategically buying streets and building houses and hotels on them so that when an opponent lands on something you own they have to pay an appropriate rental to you and so the game continues with the object being that one player is eventually rolling in money and property while their opponents scrabble around for every last penny. I don’t know if new sets of this game have been updated but on my set I find the property prices and rents very amusingly low! Land on Old Kent Road and you could have to pay £6 rent – whoa!!! If only, eh?! It may sound quick and easy but along the way there are many obstacles (as well as good bits!). Each player earns £200 each time they pass ̵
6;G0’ which can be a lifesaver believe me! Equally you may end up going to jail and only be allowed out when you throw doubles in the next three goes or pay £50 at any point – this may sound like a safe option if you’re losing at the time but unfortunately you cannot collect rent from your properties while you’re in jail either – it’s not that easy, damn! I love this game though when you are being slaughtered, like I was, you may wonder why you bothered starting it, especially given the length of the game. A little planning and strategy is required to heighten your chances as well as being pretty ruthless sometimes! I think younger children may find the game complicated and confusing but I guess from ages ten upwards to adult a lot of fun could be had (so long as you don’t argue about it!)

- 20/07/01 I was always the boat. I used to enjoy sailing down Oxford Street and Park Lane. Games could go on for days though so I stick to cricket now LOL. |

- 19/07/01 Good op, but you'd think that they might have considered house-price inflation by now, eh? |

- 19/07/01 I must've been about 12 the last time I played this! Must say I prefer silly games like Operation - good op though :) |
