Advantages: Great Fun

Disadvantages: none

There I was a few weeks ago strolling around a car boot sale. Actually it was the first one I had been to for a couple of years. My neighbours are always coming back home with their car loaded full of bargains. After weeks of promising to go one day they finally persuaded my husband and I to join in their weekly scoop.

The car boot sale, which was only a five minute car journey away and I was really surprised as to how large it was. With the car parked we headed off in search of the bargains.

Within five minutes I found a board game from the past its called Mr Pop and for only £1.00 what a bargain. Grinning from ear to ear I clutched my bargain and scurried off to show my husband. Now if you have no idea as to what Mr Pop is all about let me explain the game to you.

What you will find in the box:- 1 Base, 1 face, 25 face pieces, 9 picture cards and 1 label sheet.

Object of the game:- To make a face on Mr Pop that matches one of the picture cards before the time runs out.

When you first open the game you will need to stick all the numbered labels onto the matching numbered pieces. Stick the arrow label onto the timer knob and stick the bow tie on Mr Pop. Four rubber feet need to be stuck to the base of Mr Pop to keep it steady. Obviously this was already completed for me so I could get stuck in.

** Playing the game **

Place Mr Pop’s head in the base. Now put all the face pieces in front of you so that you can see the colours and shapes.

Push the start/stop button down and wind the timer knob clockwise until it stops.

Now you have to tilt Mr Pop’s head back until you hear a click.

Pick one of the Mr Pop’s picture cards, these are numbered and coloured, green number 1 are the easiest, blue number 2 and the hardest being red number 3.

The green cards are only what you need to make a basic looking face, such as eyes, nose and mouth.
<
br>The blue cards add little extra’s such as a hat or a pipe etc.

The red cards go into great detail on the face whereby you add the basics plus the hat, pipe etc and now you have to add the eyelashes or moustaches. The red cards are apparently for the Mr Pop experts.

Once all the above have been selected pull the start/stop button up to start the timer. Now start putting the right features in the correct places on Mr Pop’s face to match your chose picture card. This game is a race against time and when the time runs out Mr Pop’s face will flick forward and send the pieces flying.

Obviously to win the game you have to fully complete the face to match exactly to that of the picture card before your time runs out.

Sounds easy, well believe me its not, the game is based on ages 4 years and up and so far all the adults that have been introduced to the new game have failed miserably. This game is great to bring out when you have friends round for a drink as it becomes quite a giggle trying to beat the timer.

** For a more challenging game **

Once you have mastered how the game works, try playing the game by picking a card at random. Place all the cards face down and pick any card. You could also wind the timer knob just part of the way round so you would have even less time to make up the many Mr Pop faces.

** Playing against other players **

Place all the cards face down in front of the players. Each player picks a card and plays the game in turn, starting with the youngest player first. The winner is the player who does not get “popped” or who is the quickest to put together Mr Pop’s face. You can check who was quickest by looking at the coloured squares on the stickers next to the timer knob.

Has your child got a birthday coming up? What an excuse to buy it then.
