who swallowed a fly, I don't know why she swallowed a fly, perhaps she'll die!
We have a few Orchard toys games now and I really like them. I think they are well made, great for learning and more importantly fun for kids and adults alike. I find a few of them the same though, once you've played one it seems like you've played quite a few of the others too such as The Lunchbox game and the Crazy Chefs game but that's why I like this game as it's a little bit different.
There was an old lady is described as a, "fun sequencing game and you play by helping the old lady to swallow the animals by collecting them in the correct sequence. It is for ages 3 to 6 and I would say this is a fair recommendation as my little girl is now starting to enjoy it whereas a few months ago when we first got it she was still unsure how to play even with direction from me.
The set includes four old lady playing boards who each have a great big circle on their tummy. Then there are 28 animal picture cards which are all on the same sized circles. There is of course a fly, a spider, a bird, a cat, a dog, a cow and a horse and they go up in size order in that exact order. What I like is that the cards are all the same size but the size of the animal increases and if you are unsure which is next in the size order there is actually a picture card with the animals on to show you the sequence.
The animals are all quite bright and colourful and true to life and I think this makes the game fun to see how cute the little animals are. The cards are made of quite thick cardboard so they are quite robust and hold up to lots of heavy play from over excited little kids. The old lady cards are great too and each has a funny aspect about her. For example, one of the old ladies is wearing a string of pearls, another has those glasses that are attached on a chain around the neck so you don't lose them and another has a mixing spoon in her apron!
When you are ready to begin the animal card are spread out, face down on the table and you take it in turns to pick up a card. If the card is a fly card you place it on your old lady game board whilst singing the line from the song and we play you then get another go until you pick a card that is out of sequence and then your turn is over and its the next persons go.
I think this is a great game for teaching about size and sequence and also we have a lot of fun singing the song too and I think it helps with game playing in general and knowing when its your turn and when you have to wait and be patient.
The game costs £9.50 and is available from Orchard Toys.
