Orchard Toys farmyard Dominoes
With a topic of animals in the classroom, we have been re finding all of our animal themed toys and equipment and this was one of the first we started to use again.
PRODUCT AND PACKAGING...
The dominoes come in a sturdy box, with nice colourful pictures of the animals on the front and on the back of the box, the instructions- great idea because if instructions are on bits of paper we tend to lose them!
The dominoes themselves are about 8cm by 4 cm with a picture on each half. Each picture is on a colour block background, all bright colours and the pictures themselves (cat dog, tractor, hen, sheep, cow, horse) are all clear and simply drawn so that even very young children will instantly recognise them for what they are.
There are 28 dominoes in total, with 2 pictures on each, so 4 of each picture
WHO IS IT FOR?
The game can be played by 2 - 4 players and is, as Orchard Toys suggests, most suitable for children age 3 - 6 years old.
HOW TO PLAY THE GAME...
Basically this follows the normal and usually well known rules of dominoes:
* Each player takes 7 cards
* Youngest player starts by placing one of their dominoes face up on the table
* Next player matches one of his pictures with those on the table
* If a player can't match one of his/her dominoes they must take a dominoe from the table
* Game ends when one player has no dominoes left or when no one can match the dominoes
* The winner is the player with fewest dominoes
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY...
Available from orchard toys online, or in toy shops and supermarkets these dominoes cost £7.00
VERDICT...
These are good quality dominoes, sturdy and just the right size for little hands to hold. The animals are easily recognisable and are good to practise saying the names of the animals or making the sounds. We also use some of the pictures to match cvc words, and use them as a picture or object/picture matching activity.
A nice simple game for young children and another winner from Orchard Toys.A recommended educational toy.
Thanks for reading.

- 02/07/09 Is dohardminoes a play on word I'm not getting or a typo? If I'm not getting it, please explain for me (I can be thick sometimes)!
We 've got these and I'm going to review them at some point. I think they're an excellent introduction to turn taking and learning to compete nicely. |
