Advantages: great memory game

Disadvantages: children won't play it repeatedly!

I think I must have, over the years, either bought or played almost every game from Orchard Toys. This was one of the first ones I bought, and I like it because it’s a memory game, and also because it relates to something most children understand…shopping.

**What do I get?**

As with any of the Orchard Toys games, the instructions are written on the base of the box, so no stray bits of paper inside the box just ready to be lost or torn.

There are 4 “shopping trolleys” which are actually 4 sturdy thick water proof cards with a picture of a shopping trolley on each.
Each shopping trolley is divided into 8, which s ready to put the food cards into.

There are 3 food cards with a picture of a different food item on ach. These are easily recognizable, and on the whole, items children would know and recognize eg cereal, toothpaste (not a food item I know), lemons, eggs etc

There are also 4 shopping lists, with 8 items on each list, each item being listed ad shown in written and pictorial form. This helps children who can’t yet read match the correct item to that shown on their shopping list.

**How To Play the Game**

The instructions are simply written and the game is really easy to play.

The object of the game is, not surprisingly, to fill your trolley with the items written on your shopping list.

Once each player has a trolley and a shopping list they sread the cards face down on the table.

Once this is done, it basically becomes a memory game whereby players turn over a card at a time and if it matches something on their shopping list, they keep the item and put it n their trolley. If it doesn’t match,
they show the card to the other players and place it face down again on the table

**Who is it for…**

It is suggested that it is suitable for children aged 3-7 years, which is probably an appropriate indication.

**Price and Availability**

The game costs -------------

I bought this games from the catalogue which can be obtained from:

Orchard Toys
Formlend Ltd.,

**What I Thought**

I buy a lot of games from this company, and as ever, this lived up to my expectations. The game is well made and age appropriate and links well with the requirements of the National Curriculum.

The cards are plastic coated and so can withstand alot of use and I especially like the fact that the instructions can’t be lost.

As memory games go, I do like this one because it links well with children’s own experiences. Little Miss has added her own cards t the pack and we have mad our own shopping lists, depending on what she has seen bought at the supermarket. The idea of shopping is something children can relate to, and as such, the game will have a longer “shelf life” because it’s not seasonal.

I usually play memory games with children from a very young age because it encourages the skills of turn taking, communication and other interactive skills.

The game has a bit of a twist compared to other memory games in that only on, and not two cards is turned over at a time. This does make it easier for very young children to remember the card which has been turned over. The fact that children actually fill up their trolley allows them to actually see who is winning, and allows them to count how any items they will then need to completely fill their own trolley. So, as well as the suggested memory activity, it’s good to enourage number skills such as “how many more?”. We also add prices to some of the groceries and add up total costs of trolleys and shopping lists

So, a good game, and one which is hard wearing and durable and good for a number of different activities
Thanks for reading

Daniela

Summary: Great memory game focusing on familiar subject

This does sound good actually and I think both of mine would enjoy it. Can you fill in the price on your review and maybe a quick proof read as there are loads of letters missing from words. xx
